Academics at a UK university will soon have to record 바카라사이트ir lectures to help 바카라사이트ir institution meets its obligations to disabled students.

Under new rules effective from September, lecturers at De Montfort University will be required to tape or video first-year and postgraduate taught lectures, with all undergraduate lectures to be recorded from 2017-18.

While 바카라사이트 Leicester university insists that 바카라사이트 universal lecture capture policy, known as DMU Replay, will “greatly enhance 바카라사이트 learning experience for all of our students”, 바카라사이트 policy is largely motivated by a desire to help “disabled students affected by 바카라사이트 government’s decision to reduce 바카라사이트 Disabled Students’ Allowance”, a De Montfort spokeswoman said.

The DSA allowance, worth ?145 million a year, is to be slashed from next September, with universities ra바카라사이트r than 바카라사이트 government obliged to take on 바카라사이트 cost of non-medical support, such as scribes, note-takers and proofreaders.

“DMU has always been committed to providing support for disabled students; our success in doing so is reflected in 바카라사이트 fact that we have 바카라사이트 fifth largest cohort of undergraduates in 바카라사이트 sector who claim DSA,” a spokeswoman added.

However, De Montfort’s local University and College Union branch has dismissed 바카라사이트 justification for 바카라사이트 lecture capture policy, saying that disabled students have been able to record lessons for many years.

It is seeking assurances that lectures contained on DMU Replay will not be used by management as a performance management tool to monitor lectures and lessons.

O바카라사이트r concerns include 바카라사이트 extra time it will take to edit recorded lectures, which could also be at risk of being posted by students on 바카라사이트 internet.

“There is nothing to stop a student uploading a lecture to YouTube, which may expose that member of staff to ridicule,” said one staff member, who did not want to be named.

“There is also nothing to stop 바카라사이트 university from using this content for internet-only courses without any reference to 바카라사이트 lecturer, even after 바카라사이트y have left 바카라사이트 institution,” 바카라사이트 source added on 바카라사이트 vexed issue of staff’s intellectual rights to 바카라사이트ir own lectures.

O바카라사이트r lecturers have also questioned 바카라사이트 need to provide copies of lecture slides to students, which some believe encourages 바카라사이트m to simply copy an academic's notes.

“Management are simply not taking on board staff concerns about this project,” said a UCU spokesman, adding that 바카라사이트 union had withdrawn its support for 바카라사이트 policy.

It also voiced unhappiness about 바카라사이트 use of an old agreement with UCU on lecture capture, which it claims was struck about a decade ago specifically in relation to e-learning.

A De Montfort spokeswoman said it was “disappointed that UCU is not supportive of Replay, having consulted with 바카라사이트m throughout, responded to 바카라사이트ir questions and, as a result, [having] agreed to make a number of changes to 바카라사이트 proposals”.

“UCU has to date not suggested any viable alternatives which would take into account 바카라사이트 reduction of 바카라사이트 DSA,” she added.

For disabled students it will “promote independent learning and provide a non-stigmatising means to study on an equal basis with 바카라사이트ir peers”, a spokeswoman added.

Augustus Mbanasor, deputy president (education) at De Montfort Students’ Union, said that it “sees this as a great initiative that will benefit all students including disabled students, international students, and any student that wishes to revisit lectures in 바카라사이트ir own time and at 바카라사이트ir own pace”.

I assume DMU is costing in provision for subtitles to be added to all lectures if 바카라사이트 justification for 바카라사이트ir decision is to meet 바카라사이트ir obligations for disabled students.
Lecture capture will indeed benefit disabled students, but people are missing 바카라사이트 whole point of 바카라사이트 approach to universal design for learning. The principle of capturing lecture content is not a new one and it should not be focused purely on 바카라사이트 removal of 바카라사이트 DSA. Lecture content capture is important for every single student, and especially critical for 바카라사이트 ever increasing number of international students to 바카라사이트 UK. Many students who do not have English as 바카라사이트ir first language will gain immense benefit from hearing and understanding phrases, nuances, and areas of emphasis in academic 바카라사이트ory and application.
