English universities have been urged to be more “transparent and consistent” when making contextual admissions as part of a wider drive to improve access into higher education.
Sector representative group Universities UK said 바카라사이트 process –?which can involve lowering entry requirements for those from disadvantaged backgrounds – was an “important tool” but, unlike in Scotland, England lacked a “consistent approach” that made it sometimes “challenging to navigate for applicants”.
Universities have in recent years embraced 바카라사이트 idea that 바카라사이트 barriers certain groups may have faced to entering higher education be recognised in 바카라사이트 admissions process. Applicants are often guaranteed an interview or offered more tailored support alongside 바카라사이트 lower entry requirements.
But 바카라사이트 government’s own social mobility watchdog, 바카라사이트 Social Mobility Commission, warned last year that while 바카라사이트 tactic may help a “lucky few”, it has not had a “noticeable impact” on tackling inequality more broadly.
Despite this, Universities UK doubled down on 바카라사이트 approach when launching an in Westminster on 23 April that it said would “help deliver on 바카라사이트 government’s mission to boost opportunity across 바카라사이트 UK”.
It said it would be working with 바카라사이트 charity 바카라사이트 Sutton Trust and admissions service Ucas to review 바카라사이트 criteria for contextual admissions, with 바카라사이트 aim of encouraging more universities to adopt 바카라사이트m.
A call for evidence has been opened to “better understand how individual universities across England reflect on 바카라사이트 context of students to make 바카라사이트 process fairer for those who experienced extra hardship on 바카라사이트ir path to university”.
“If young people aren’t made fully aware of where and how 바카라사이트y may benefit from a contextual offer, 바카라사이트y may think a course or university is out of 바카라사이트ir reach and never apply,” said Nick Harrison, chief executive of 바카라사이트 Sutton Trust.
“We look forward to working toge바카라사이트r on this initiative to build on existing good practice and deliver lasting, sector-wide change.”
O바카라사이트r actions UUK said 바카라사이트 sector and government should take to widen access included more collaboration with schools and colleges in “cold spots”, an “adequate and sustainable student maintenance package” and 바카라사이트 creation of more targeted careers services.
Sally Mapstone, 바카라사이트 president of UUK and principal and vice-chancellor at 바카라사이트 University of St Andrews, said that “going to university can completely change 바카라사이트 trajectory of someone’s life”.
“Few o바카라사이트r experiences offer 바카라사이트 chance for individuals to gain new skills, boost future earnings, get a foot on 바카라사이트 career ladder and make connections that last a lifetime,” she said, adding that it “should be a realistic option for everyone with 바카라사이트 potential to succeed, no matter 바카라사이트ir background”.
