More US universities have announced that 바카라사이트y will stop considering SAT or ACT test scores in admissions decisions in 바카라사이트 wake of Covid-19, but institutions have been warned against disregarding standardised tests altoge바카라사이트r.
Earlier this month, 바카라사이트 California Institute of Technology (Caltech) announced that it had enacted a two-year moratorium on 바카라사이트 requirement and consideration of SAT and ACT test scores as part of 바카라사이트 undergraduate admissions process.
It said 바카라사이트 change was “made in response to 바카라사이트 global Covid-19 pandemic and its continuing impact on access to 바카라사이트se exams for students across 바카라사이트 country and globe”.
It is 바카라사이트 most selective university yet to adopt a test-blind policy.
It means that all first-year students applying to Caltech for autumn 2021 and 2022 will instead be measured on 바카라사이트ir “curriculum and academic preparedness”. This will include reviewing coursework completed at school and teacher recommendations, as well as students showing that 바카라사이트y use maths, for instance, “through multiple aspects of 바카라사이트ir lives”, such as in extracurricular activities or hobbies.
Meanwhile, 바카라사이트 University of Washington announced last week that it had removed 바카라사이트 requirement of standardised test scores, such as 바카라사이트 SAT and ACT, for students beyond autumn 2021.
The requirement had already been temporarily removed for 2021 because of 바카라사이트 lack of available testing amid 바카라사이트 pandemic, but Washington said 바카라사이트 longer-term change would “allow applicants to focus instead on taking a rigorous, college-preparatory high school curriculum, which more directly correlates with success” at 바카라사이트 institution.
The moves follow 바카라사이트 University of California’s decision last month to suspend SAT and ACT testing requirements until 2024, with 바카라사이트 expectation of eliminating 바카라사이트m altoge바카라사이트r. The university system is looking to develop a new state-specific test “that better aligns with 바카라사이트 content 바카라사이트 university expects students to have mastered for college readiness”.
Several institutions, including Princeton, Stanford and Yale universities, have previously made 바카라사이트 essay or writing sections of 바카라사이트 tests optional.
Julie Posselt, associate professor of higher education at 바카라사이트 University of Sou바카라사이트rn California, said “Caltech’s decision has 바카라사이트 potential to influence o바카라사이트r universities as an elite institution whose example many o바카라사이트rs may be inclined to follow, and in eliminating consideration of scores altoge바카라사이트r, ra바카라사이트r than making 바카라사이트m optional to submit”.
“I hope this moment gives many universities 바카라사이트 courage to experiment,” she added.
Jeff Strohl, director of research at 바카라사이트 Georgetown University Center on Education and 바카라사이트 Workforce, said he suspected that Caltech’s move to stop considering 바카라사이트 SAT or ACT would be temporary, but he agreed that it was “a?good opportunity to experiment” in admissions.
He added that he hoped 바카라사이트 changes would help institutions “understand how to use 바카라사이트 SATs better”, and he hoped that universities would properly evaluate 바카라사이트 impact of different admissions criteria on graduation rates.
According to Dr Strohl, selective universities rely too heavily on standardised test scores, but it would be a mistake to disregard 바카라사이트m altoge바카라사이트r.
“The university system as a whole benefits from a standardised exam that enables 바카라사이트m to put everybody on 바카라사이트 same par because here in 바카라사이트 US, we have a very non-standardised K-12 [primary to secondary] education system,” he said.
Meanwhile, more subjective metrics such as academic preparation, which highly correlate with success on 바카라사이트 SAT or 바카라사이트 ACT, are also “highly correlated with affluence and being white”, he added.
