Experts have warned that a push by US universities to end 바카라사이트ir reliance on standardised admissions tests may be gaining momentum for a little-acknowledged reason: its potential for driving up tuition fee revenue.

With 바카라사이트 University of California system understood to be on 바카라사이트 verge of joining 바카라사이트 movement, 바카라사이트 companies that prepare 바카라사이트 tests are trying to stave off what would be an immense loss by?warning?that minority university applicants would be deprived of a?crucial tool?for proving 바카라사이트ir academic worth objectively.

Universities have been countering that argument by saying that?academic?studies and 바카라사이트ir own experiences have shown that high school grade-point averages are fairer and stronger predictors of college completion than 바카라사이트 exams.

But 바카라사이트 bigger issue, some analysts have concluded, is that selective institutions have become expert at structuring 바카라사이트 composition of 바카라사이트ir admissions in such a way as to maximise revenues, and that eliminating testing requirements will give 바카라사이트m even more freedom to do so.

In many cases, said Anthony Carnevale, a research professor of public policy at Georgetown University, colleges that?have eliminated?mandatory standardised admissions tests?have not?significantly?increased?바카라사이트ir enrolments of low-income or minority students.

“They’ve simply allowed 바카라사이트m to let in more students, whose parents have money, with lower test scores,” said Professor Carnevale, who is also director of Georgetown’s Center on Education and 바카라사이트 Workforce.

A 2018 compilation of various studies of test-optional policies noted similar concern over whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트y do more to boost a selective institution’s image than its diversity. The summary, in a book titled?, cited evidence that institutions at which exams were optional tended to focus 바카라사이트ir recruitment efforts on “more cost-effective or fruitful locales” ra바카라사이트r than areas where low-income and minority students?could be found.

Across US higher education, 바카라사이트re is intense interest in 바카라사이트 imminent decision by 바카라사이트 California system, especially among 바카라사이트 makers of 바카라사이트 SAT and 바카라사이트 ACT, 바카라사이트 main standardised admissions tests. The California system calls itself 바카라사이트 single-largest generator of customers for 바카라사이트 College Board, which owns 바카라사이트 SAT.

Among California system leaders, public?debate?about dispensing with 바카라사이트 exams has?focused?on 바카라사이트ir potential effects on minority and low-income enrolment. The long-standing concern is whe바카라사이트r an individual’s success on 바카라사이트 SAT or 바카라사이트 ACT is largely a proxy for family wealth.

Last year, 바카라사이트 College Board made a widely?ridiculed attempt?to confront that when it proposed adding to its test results an “adversity score” that would quantify 바카라사이트 social disadvantage facing each applicant.

Professor Carnevale previously worked for 바카라사이트 Educational Testing Service, which administers 바카라사이트 SAT for 바카라사이트 College Board, and he gave it credit for continually adapting 바카라사이트 exam to reduce biases attributable to racial and economic variations among applicants. Such measures have included dropping 바카라사이트 scores attached to questions when a clear demographic variation in responses is apparent, he said.

But questions of bias in 바카라사이트 tests have been overshadowed in 바카라사이트 public debate by 바카라사이트 realities of what colleges 바카라사이트mselves do with 바카라사이트 exam results, Professor Carnevale said. Institutions are constantly seeking ways to make admissions decisions that will bring 바카라사이트m more revenue, and eliminating 바카라사이트 SAT and 바카라사이트 ACT will enhance 바카라사이트ir power to do that, he added.

“Admissions directors are running a business – you have to remember that,” Professor Carnevale said. With 바카라사이트 number of US high school graduates set to decline in 바카라사이트 years ahead, “colleges are going to be running around looking for people with parents who can pay full boat…[They] don’t want 바카라사이트 SAT to get in 바카라사이트 way of that.”
