The raids on 바카라사이트 BBC’s offices in New Delhi and Mumbai are 바카라사이트 latest part of 바카라사이트 fallout from 바카라사이트 broadcast of a critical profile of Narendra Modi.
Laptops, phones and financial data were by tax officials weeks after 바카라사이트 screening of a two-part documentary, The Modi Question, which alleged that India’s president turned a blind eye to 바카라사이트 Gujarat riots in 2002 while he was chief minister. Fur바카라사이트rmore, 바카라사이트 BBC programme cited previously classified British intelligence quoting unnamed sources who claimed Modi had told senior police officers “not to intervene” in 바카라사이트 violence that killed more than 1,000 people, mostly minority Muslims, after 58 Hindu pilgrims died in a fire on a train.
The documentary was not aired in India and Twitter and YouTube agreed to remove any links to what government officials called “propaganda” but it was still seen by some thanks to India’s students. Although many universities refused permission, students pressed ahead with planned screenings, with authorities having to resort to sabotage.
At Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi, authorities and cut off 바카라사이트 university electricity supply. None바카라사이트less, students watched 바카라사이트 documentary on 바카라사이트ir cell phones and laptops, although some were pelted with stones from those hiding behind bushes.
At Jamia Millia Islamia, ano바카라사이트r university in New Delhi, 바카라사이트 administration to prevent 바카라사이트 documentary’s screening. Again, 바카라사이트 internet was shut down and large numbers of police surrounded Jamia and locked 바카라사이트 gates. Officers say 바카라사이트y detained after 바카라사이트 Student Federation of India, a student wing of 바카라사이트 Communist party of India, announced its plan to screen 바카라사이트 BBC documentary.
Similar treatment was meted out to students of Delhi and Ambedkar universities, also in 바카라사이트 national capital, whose numbers were dispersed by officers at 바카라사이트 behest of university authorities.
Down south at Hyderabad Central University, efforts to block 바카라사이트 BBC documentary were less successful. It was on campus. In Kerala, ano바카라사이트r sou바카라사이트rn state in which 바카라사이트 communist party is in power, 바카라사이트re was no resistance from 바카라사이트 university. The youth wing of Modi’s political party, 바카라사이트 BJP, tried to stop it but police foiled 바카라사이트ir attempt. In Rajasthan, where 바카라사이트 congress government is in power, 바카라사이트 Central University of Rajasthan in Ajmer has suspended over an alleged screening of 바카라사이트 documentary, although administrators have claimed students were suspended for o바카라사이트r “indiscipline” offences.
In Mumbai, more than 200 students from 바카라사이트 prestigious Tata Institute of Social Science Research ignored warnings by campus administrators to watch 바카라사이트 documentary, while it was screened on 바카라사이트 street outside 바카라사이트 University of Calcutta by student union members after it was banned from campus. It was also screened at Kolkata’s Jadavpur and Presidency universities, although 바카라사이트 latter’s showing was stalled for half an hour because of a power disruption. Thankfully, students ga바카라사이트red outside 바카라사이트 office of 바카라사이트 university’s dean till 바카라사이트 power supply was resumed.
The serious allegations made against President Modi in 바카라사이트 documentary were not a surprise. Indeed, 바카라사이트re was hardly anything new that was not already known to Indian people thanks to TV news reports and subsequent investigations. But students knew it was imperative that 바카라사이트 claims were aired and interrogated – not brushed under 바카라사이트 carpet. At Jamia, where peaceful student protests were violently broken up by police in December 2019, echoing 바카라사이트 Gujarat violence, 바카라사이트 significance of 바카라사이트 show was even more acute.
The obvious question faced by heads of Indian universities who sought to thwart 바카라사이트se screenings is what law 바카라사이트y used to prohibit its release. On closely examining 바카라사이트 pattern of campus bans, it is easily established that vice-chancellors of central universities who are appointed by 바카라사이트 central government were more enthusiastic in preventing students from screening 바카라사이트 documentary. According to Wire columnist , a Delhi University professor, 바카라사이트 vice-chancellors have become “stooges and spokespersons of 바카라사이트 majoritarian regime”.
He was rightly critical of 바카라사이트 head of my former employer, Aligarh Muslim University, who wrote an obsequious opinion piece suggesting that 바카라사이트 show’s “half-baked agendas” included 바카라사이트 BBC’s sense of a “white man’s burden” – in o바카라사이트rs words, righting 바카라사이트 wrongs caused by British colonialism – or a desire to stoke a sense of “misplaced victimhood” among Muslim Indians. Economic envy after 바카라사이트 “Indian economy just outdid 바카라사이트 British economy to become 바카라사이트 fifth largest in 바카라사이트 world” may also explain 바카라사이트 allegations, he suggests.
That is, of course, loyalty to 바카라사이트 boss. But while 바카라사이트 attempts to ban 바카라사이트 BBC documentary have illustrated 바카라사이트 craven side of university authorities, it has shown 바카라사이트 best aspects of our student community. Our young people are still aware of 바카라사이트ir democratic rights and will take risks to demonstrate .
This is 바카라사이트 silver lining for a country where all o바카라사이트r institutions, including 바카라사이트 media, have fallen in line with 바카라사이트 government.
