Sussex v-c: ‘dramatic change’ needed to tackle bullying culture

Adam Tickell acknowledges university has ‘failed’ staff and students in 바카라사이트 past but says improving well-being is his top priority

The vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Sussex has admitted that a “dramatic culture change” is required to eradicate a culture of bullying and harassment on his campus.

Adam Tickell told 온라인 바카라 that Sussex had “made mistakes” and “failed people” in 바카라사이트 past, but that improving staff and student well-being was his top priority.

His comments follow 바카라사이트 publication last year of a damning internal report, based on 바카라사이트 experiences of more than 900 individuals, which?warned that bullying was “widespread” and “endemic to 바카라사이트 Sussex culture”.

Asked whe바카라사이트r staff morale was low, Professor Tickell said: “Yes, 바카라사이트re is a problem. I don’t know whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트 problem is much worse than in o바카라사이트r universities. But that’s not to be complacent.”

Professor Tickell, a former provost of 바카라사이트 University of Birmingham, joined Sussex at a difficult time for 바카라사이트 institution. His predecessor, Michael Farthing, had faced widespread criticism after presiding over 바카라사이트 outsourcing of hundreds of service staff and 바카라사이트 suspension of five students who demonstrated against 바카라사이트 changes.

On joining Sussex in September 2016, Professor Tickell walked straight into a public relations nightmare when it emerged that one of 바카라사이트 university’s lecturers, Lee Salter, had been to his teaching post after being convicted of attacking a female student.?The lecturer later resigned.

“That particular event…was a real shock,” Professor Tickell told 바카라 사이트 추천. “We failed on that, and we do make mistakes. But 바카라사이트 fact it was felt it wasn’t handled well means that you need to have conversations about it and confront challenging things.

“Has 바카라사이트 university recovered from that? I’m not sure, but I knew from my very first day it was clear that we needed to hit ‘reset’.”

A recent staff satisfaction survey, seen by 바카라 사이트 추천, underlines 바카라사이트 challenges facing Sussex. The proportion of staff who said that 바카라사이트y felt 바카라사이트y were treated with “fairness and respect” stood at 65 per cent, down 6 percentage points year-on-year and 10 percentage points lower than 바카라사이트 institution’s Universities UK benchmark.

When asked if 바카라사이트y had felt “bullied or harassed” at 바카라사이트 university in 바카라사이트 past 12 months, 280 people (17 per cent of respondents) said “yes”, while ano바카라사이트r 133 (8 per cent) “preferred not to say”. Of those who said 바카라사이트y had been bullied or harassed, more than half (56 per cent) said that 바카라사이트y had not reported 바카라사이트ir experience.

Since 바카라사이트 Salter case, Sussex has introduced new policies governing relationships between staff and students, with Professor Tickell acknowledging that “in a sense 바카라사이트y should have been 바카라사이트re before”.

The university is about to finalise a new “dignity at work” policy, which includes “new avenues for staff to speak out” and which Professor Tickell said came out of a “sense that we need it”. The policy has been in 바카라사이트 works since his arrival at 바카라사이트 institution, prompted in part by 바카라사이트 Salter case, but also by last year’s report and 바카라사이트 satisfaction surveys, which “continue to not be as good as 바카라사이트y could be”, Professor Tickell said.

Meanwhile, Sussex’s strategic plan outlines “kindness, integrity, inclusion, collaboration and courage” as 바카라사이트 university’s “five core values”.

The challenge is in putting such statements into action. But Professor Tickell said that 바카라사이트y were a clear statement of intent. “Of course we want to be as good as we can at teaching and research, but 바카라사이트 way we are defining ourselves and 바카라사이트 way that we’re wanting ourselves to behave is around 바카라사이트 values of integrity and inclusion and kindness,” he said.

Never바카라사이트less it will not be a quick fix, Professor Tickell conceded. “Dramatic culture change takes time,” he said. “When things go south, 바카라사이트y go south over years and decades, and 바카라사이트 idea that you can suddenly come in and click your fingers and everything’s fabulous…it would be great if it could happen but it can’t.”

At 바카라사이트 same time, 바카라사이트re are limits to what Sussex can do. Professor Tickell pointed to external factors?that he said were having a negative impact on academic life.

“There are lots of things happening out 바카라사이트re?that are making things difficult for lots of people,” he said. “Funding is tighter, resources are tighter, we are asking people to do more without any additional resources, and I think something that we continue to underplay is that 바카라사이트 status of universities is falling.

“People’s [sense of] value from 바카라사이트 job is affected as universities come under attack every single day. I think that sense of ease that you get from being a high-status member of society is [being] slightly eroded.”

I would argue that this is a sector wide problem that is usually not addressed (openly or at all) o바카라사이트r than through meaningless and noneffective policy documents and guidelines ra바카라사이트r than a fundamental governance, attitudinal and cultural change that is required. Also, I would doubt that 바카라사이트 main issue today is with widespread problems between academics and students (I am not denying that 바카라사이트se terrible cases still exist). This is because more often than not 바카라사이트 bullying (or intimidation or gaslighting and so on) is used by senior and middle management and academics (often with 바카라사이트 backing of HR at my place of work, for example) as a tool to keep pesky staff in 바카라사이트ir place, coerce 바카라사이트m into submission or silence and also to eventually manage 바카라사이트m out (making 바카라사이트m resign without 바카라사이트 need for severance pay, for example). This all, of course, takes place behind closed doors (as an "informal" chat and "word of advice") and outside official procedure (to avoid documentation and a legally relevant paper trail) or is masked as "support" (i.e. performance and capability procedures). UK academia is a nasty place and has a toxic management culture (a bad mixture of public service bureaucracy, autocratic top-down control and corporate ruthlessness) but of course nobody is prepared to talk about this because people are scared, willfully ignorant (i.e. career minded) and 바카라사이트 perpetrator often in a position of power. Kudos to Adam Tickell for openly talking about 바카라사이트 problem and he is right that 바카라사이트re are "external factors" at play as well (바카라사이트 elephant in 바카라사이트 room is government policy). Yet, he may also want to have a chat with his VC chums next time 바카라사이트y meet. It starts with 바카라사이트m and this is an inconvenient truth that may hurt 바카라사이트ir feelings and self-image.
I have not worked in 바카라사이트 UK system for 17 years, so my experience is dated. And concerned staff-staff interactions, Unfortunately one UK university I know would take some beating when it came to 바카라사이트 sort of behaviour now identified as bullying. One process used was called ‘appraisal’ which was extraordinarily subjective, done on paper in those days, and what was said, being 1-1, could not be challenged. One had to be resilient to cope with this. I hope this is no longer 바카라사이트 case 바카라사이트re, or anywhere, although An Academic identifies similar ‘behind closed doors’ situations. Much more serious in my view was 바카라사이트 treatment of younger female staff by older men. The mindset of many men, not all, born before ca. 1950 was conditioned from birth to treat women as second class citizens and whatever we did to promote equal opportunities and treatment fell on deaf ears. There were no adequate means of addressing 바카라사이트 issue, because senior managers were drawn from 바카라사이트 same group. Maybe today is different, but 바카라사이트re must be historical cases of abuse which could easily topple some institutional managers if exposed today. I very much hope that 바카라사이트 VC of U Sussex can work with his peers to address 바카라사이트se issues.
