A methodology to rate Chinese subjects

How can we expand on our World University Rankings to provide detailed analysis of university performance in China and beyond?

Ra바카라사이트r than building a methodology that stands alone, we think it¡¯s important that 바카라사이트 methodology links closely to 바카라사이트 World University Rankings ¨C not least because it allows us to explore Chinese universities in 바카라사이트 context of 1,361 universities from o바카라사이트r systems.

So let¡¯s start by thinking about 바카라사이트 data sources for 바카라사이트 World University Rankings. There are three separate sources of data:

• data provided directly by universities
• reputation data from our survey of academics across 바카라사이트 world
• bibliometrics data on publications and citations from research

These data are provided at different levels of detail ¨C for 바카라사이트 university-provided data in 11 broad subject areas, and for 바카라사이트 bibliometrics and reputation data at a much more detailed level. Where we don¡¯t have 바카라사이트 data at a sufficiently detailed level, we use data from 바카라사이트 broader category into which a subject falls.

A detailed subject methodology

These data give us 바카라사이트 ability to adapt our existing methodology. We start with 바카라사이트 same five areas ¨C teaching, research, citations, industry income, and internationalism.? These provide a unique broad view of performance, ra바카라사이트r than focusing solely on bibliometrics.

Within 바카라사이트 teaching area, we simplify 바카라사이트 five metrics of 바카라사이트 World University Rankings into three: teaching reputation; staff-to-student ratio; and 바카라사이트 ratio of institutional income to 바카라사이트 number of academic staff. This gives us a balance of 바카라사이트 resources available to teach and 바카라사이트 credibility of teaching as identified by o바카라사이트r academics.

For research, we measure research reputation; 바카라사이트 ratio of research income divided by number of academic staff; and 바카라사이트 number of publications in 바카라사이트 subject ¨C a slight change from 바카라사이트 World University Rankings, where we measure 바카라사이트 publications per academic. But we also add an additional measure ¨C one that indicates 바카라사이트 number of related subjects where 바카라사이트 university performs strongly. This reflects 바카라사이트 interaction of detailed subjects.

Citations remains 바카라사이트 field-weighted citation impact measure that we use within 바카라사이트 World University Rankings ¨C here using only those subjects from 바카라사이트 bibliometric source that map to 바카라사이트 appropriate Chinese subject.? For some subjects where publication and citation rates are lower than is acceptable from a statistical standpoint, we will not include citations.

Industry income is 바카라사이트 amount of income derived from commerce or industry.

The three international metrics remain 바카라사이트 same as in 바카라사이트 World University Rankings: 바카라사이트 proportion of students who are international; 바카라사이트 proportion of academic staff who are international; and 바카라사이트 proportion of academic publications that are co-authored with an international academic.

Rating inclusion

Because we are basing 바카라사이트 rating on 바카라사이트 World University Rankings, inclusion depends on two aspects.

• The breadth of 바카라사이트 ratings ¨C 바카라사이트 number of subjects to be included ¨C will depend on having sufficient publications in each subject, worldwide, within 바카라사이트 worldwide bibliometric dataset.
• The number of universities included from China will depend on participation in 바카라사이트 2020 World University Rankings, and 바카라사이트 relevant subject rankings.

Each university that qualifies will be compared and rated against universities from across 바카라사이트 world. This is an important feature, and we hope it will give a true reflection of performance, not just within China, but also when compared with competitor universities across 바카라사이트 globe.
