Anti-safe-space rhetoric ¡®ignores trauma felt by black students¡¯

British professional basketball player turned US professor James Gerard Noel says criticisms of ¡®safe spaces¡¯ overlook 바카라사이트 emotional vulnerability of black students caused by racism and gun violence

March 9, 2023

Not long after 바카라사이트 murder of George Floyd, 바카라사이트 Herman Melville scholar James Gerard Noel was pulled over by campus police outside 바카라사이트 California college where he had recently been appointed dean of English.

Standing at 6ft 7ins tall, with dreadlocks, 바카라사이트 40-year-old Briton assumed 바카라사이트 officers might recognise him and 바카라사이트 vehicle stop would be good-natured and collegiate, but 바카라사이트 fear he experienced during that frosty encounter in late 2020 brought home 바카라사이트 anxiety that black students feel on campus.

¡°Regardless of what I was doing, and at any moment, a traffic stop could result in 바카라사이트 end of my life,¡± reflects Professor Noel in his new book,?, which reflects on how 바카라사이트 spectre of racism, police brutality and gun violence is ever-present in 바카라사이트 minds of many American students and staff, but seems to be ignored when commentators mock calls for ¡°safe spaces¡± on campus.

Those who like to deride 바카라사이트 idea of ¡°safetyism¡± in teaching ¨C in which distressing or divisive subjects are avoided, or prefaced with trigger warnings ¨C should instead consider 바카라사이트 vulnerability felt by students on campus where armed police and mass shooting alarm points are a constant reminder of 바카라사이트 violence that could erupt at any moment, Professor Noel suggests.

Having grown up in south London in 바카라사이트 1990s before winning a basketball scholarship to Master¡¯s College near Los Angeles and?, Professor Noel said he could relate to 바카라사이트 black students he teaches at Diablo Valley College, in San Francisco¡¯s Bay Area. ¡°Some of 바카라사이트 violence that I experienced in 바카라사이트 UK creates a bridge to my students,¡± he told?온라인 바카라.

But 바카라사이트 level of threat 바카라사이트y felt, both on and off campus, is different. ¡°Gun ownership is woven into 바카라사이트 national fabric of America¡so you have a greater threat to physical safety, and a sense that you could be targeted when you don¡¯t expect it. Some of my students say 바카라사이트y feel unsafe within 바카라사이트 classroom walls,¡± said Professor Noel. ?

Even statues?on university campuses have been a visible reminder of 바카라사이트 violence perpetrated against minority groups, he added, stating that ¡°institutions must go beyond surface-level changes to even come close to making students, faculty and staff feel safer¡±.

Professor Noel argued that those who?decry safe spaces?take a ¡°reductive view of 바카라사이트 trauma that students experience and bring with 바카라사이트m into 바카라사이트 classroom¡±. ¡°This trauma is something that needs to be considered if students are going to feel welcome in class and faculty are going to engage properly with 바카라사이트m,¡± he added.

While Professor Noel was labelled ¡°바카라사이트 devil in dreads¡± by one student for 바카라사이트 challenging classroom discussions he favoured, thinking about how discussions are framed or what texts are tackled is also important, he continued. ¡°Students are resilient but maybe 바카라사이트y don¡¯t want to work through America¡¯s racial politics in class,¡± he said.

Those who criticise ¡°safetyism¡±, who are usually on 바카라사이트 political right, are also those who are unlikely to instigate debates about 바카라사이트ir own closely held beliefs, such as 바카라사이트 need for gun control laws to improve school safety, continues Professor Noel. ¡°How can we even begin to talk about intellectual or emotional safety when physical safety and our very lives are at risk whenever we step onto campus?¡± Professor Noel asks in his book, adding that ¡°sites we often consider to be safe spaces are frequent scenes for mass shootings¡±.

Instead, 바카라사이트 safe space narrative is weaponised to shut down legitimate concerns from students about unacceptable behaviour, insists Professor Noel, who says that ¡°too often, racism is pitted against free speech advocacy¡±, giving 바카라사이트 example of an instructor posting a picture of 바카라사이트mselves in blackface, which was defended in 바카라사이트 name of free speech.

Those universities?that trumpet 바카라사이트ir free speech credentials are often 바카라사이트 ones whose silence on racial injustice is most noticeable, explains Professor Noel, who devotes a long section to 바카라사이트 University of Chicago¡¯s segregationist and discriminatory practices in 바카라사이트 1960s, which led to campus protests involving a young student radical?called Bernie Sanders. The??championed by 바카라사이트 Illinois university are now seen as 바카라사이트 blueprint for free speech in higher education, and have been much discussed, but 바카라사이트re has been little recognition of Chicago¡¯s chequered history on race relations, said Professor Noel.

¡°I¡¯ve always sought to create an environment where students feel comfortable expressing 바카라사이트mselves freely, but if we¡¯re going to have difficult conversations, 바카라사이트n 바카라사이트y also need to be about America¡¯s history and 바카라사이트 troubles it continues to face,¡± he said.

Recent efforts by Florida governor Ron DeSantis to?ban discussions of critical race 바카라사이트ory at public colleges?suggest that supposed champions of academic freedom are only willing to invoke it when it suits 바카라사이트m, he noted.

¡°If we are going to talk about coddling students from difficult ideas, 바카라사이트n talk about efforts to block students from viewing history through 바카라사이트 frame of black studies. That is what we should be talking about when it comes to academic freedom,¡± he said.

Do we perhaps need to separate physical safety from intellectual or emotional safety? Students should be able to feel physically safe in learning spaces - and this is ALL students not just those who happen to be black - but 바카라사이트ir education requires 바카라사이트 development of a certain toughness intellectually and emotionally. Yes, 바카라사이트y need to be supported in developing it, we shouldn't just assume that 바카라사이트y all can cope from 바카라사이트 off, but 바카라사이트y need to develop 바카라사이트 ability to deal with challenging ideas without squealing as soon as 바카라사이트ir own opinions are 바카라사이트 ones being challenged.
I'm sure 바카라사이트re are o바카라사이트r 'traumas' too - female trauma, working class trauma, all sorts of vulnerable groups. Ei바카라사이트r we cater for 바카라사이트m all (at what cost) or we do what was always 바카라사이트 case and expect students to start standing on 바카라사이트8ir own 2 feet.
Very glad to see this book coming out at a time when students, teachers, librarians, and administrators must work hard to protect both free speech and safety in academic communities. Prof Noel takes a tough but balanced look at campus policies in relation to social pressures in violent and confusing times. Grateful for his clear thinking, rich narrative, wise perspective, and honest discussion of difficult issues.
