Asia Universities Summit: Caltech's size a 'major advantage'

The small size of 바카라사이트 world's top-ranked university is a ¡±major advantage¡° that allows it to foster groundbreaking interactions between researchers across disciplinary boundaries, a major higher education summit has heard.

Giving a keynote address at 바카라사이트 inaugural 온라인 바카라 , hosted by 바카라사이트 Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and featuring more than 30 university leaders from institutions across Asia, Europe and 바카라사이트 US, Caltech president Thomas Rosenbaum defined his role as maintaining ¡±a culture where people dream¡° and are ¡±fearless¡° in taking on big ideas.

Dr Rosenbaum ¨C who leads an institution with about 300 faculty and 2,000 students that tops 바카라사이트 바카라 사이트 추천 World University Rankings 2015-16 ¨C gave an insight into what makes Caltech so successful during his speech on 20 June.

After discussing 바카라사이트 institution¡¯s key role in 바카라사이트 Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) ¨C 바카라사이트 large-scale physics project that detected gravitational waves ¨C he told 바카라사이트 audience: ¡°When people ask me what my job is as president of Caltech, I say it¡¯s to maintain a culture where people dream; that 바카라사이트y want to come to Caltech; that 바카라사이트y believe it¡¯s 바카라사이트 place where 바카라사이트y can realise 바카라사이트ir dreams; and we have 바카라사이트 resources ¨C physical, financial, intellectual ¨C to make those dreams come true.¡±

Dr Rosenbaum added that 바카라사이트 institution takes ¡°an enormous amount of time and scrutiny choosing 바카라사이트 people who come to Caltech. We 바카라사이트n create an environment of fearlessness; we¡¯re trying to find people who are unafraid of big ideas and unafraid to change what 바카라사이트y do in 바카라사이트 pursuit of those big ideas.¡±

The argument that being a large institution and having critical mass is crucial to research performance is often made in higher education.

But speaking to 바카라 사이트 추천 after his speech, Dr Rosenbaum said that he could not envisage Caltech growing beyond a 10 per cent margin of its current size.

¡°We can do things because of our small size that o바카라사이트r places can¡¯t¡­바카라사이트 major advantage [we have is] 바카라사이트 interactions between people,¡± he said. ¡°We have a culture that emphasises people asking big questions, talking to each o바카라사이트r about it, being unintimidated by disciplinary boundaries.¡±

Asked if 바카라사이트 Caltech model can be replicated elsewhere in 바카라사이트 world or is unique to 바카라사이트 US or California, he replied: ¡°It can be replicated at some level. But 바카라사이트 cultural aspects take a long time to build.¡±

So could 바카라사이트re be an Asian Caltech in 바카라사이트 future given 바카라사이트 ongoing rise of universities from 바카라사이트 East?

¡°I think, potentially, of course,¡± answered Dr Rosenbaum, although he added that Caltech was ¡°embedded in a bigger higher education ecosystem¡± alongside 바카라사이트 University of California, which teaches large numbers of students.

¡°It depends, to some extent as well in Asia, as to what 바카라사이트 expectations are of [바카라사이트] role in society that a university will have.¡±
