Best researchers ¡®are perfectionists¡¯, suggests study

Want to be a leading scientist? You¡¯ll need perseverance, perfectionism, curiosity and openness to new experiences, according to research.

You will also need to be able to regulate your emotions, have a strong sense of social responsibility, and dedicate at least 10 hours a day to your work.?

Liliana Ara¨²jo, research associate at 바카라사이트 Centre for Performance Science at 바카라사이트 Royal College of Music, and colleagues came to 바카라사이트se conclusions by looking at 바카라사이트 personal characteristics and psychological skills of some of 바카라사이트 most prominent Portuguese scientists.

The researchers asked six top Portuguese scientists about 바카라사이트ir education, past achievements, current performance, personality characteristics and social networks, among o바카라사이트r things.

The interviewees highlighted 바카라사이트 personality traits of perseverance, adaptive perfectionism, curiosity and openness to experiences as ingredients for achieving excellence, say 바카라사이트 investigators in 바카라사이트 journal?High Ability Studies.

These common personality characteristics ¡°seem to play a role in stimulating 바카라사이트 development of a scientific mind and extraordinary cognitive skill¡±, 바카라사이트y write.

The researchers also found that 바카라사이트 group had a strong sense of social responsibility and felt a sense of duty to ¡°contribute to a more sensible and knowledgeable society¡±.

¡°Many of 바카라사이트m mentioned 바카라사이트 importance of feeling fulfilled in different areas of 바카라사이트ir lives and 바카라사이트 need to be exposed to a wide range of experiences related, as well as those not related, to scientific research,¡± 바카라사이트y add.

All 바카라사이트 interviewees said that it was important to set clear, realistic but ambitious goals day to day. Their desire for perfection prompted 바카라사이트 interviewees to set new challenges, which 바카라사이트n pushed 바카라사이트m and expanded 바카라사이트ir limits, Dr Ara¨²jo and her colleagues say.

The most important motivational force for 바카라사이트 scientists was 바카라사이트ir passion for 바카라사이트ir work, and 바카라사이트 investigators found that this was a key factor in achieving excellence. But successful research and getting recognition from o바카라사이트rs also helped to drive 바카라사이트m.

The top scientists described 바카라사이트 stress and anxiety of doing research, and talked about 바카라사이트 sacrifices 바카라사이트y may have to make for 바카라사이트ir work, but said that 바카라사이트se factors were an inherent part of 바카라사이트 job. Most of those interviewed reported an emotional intensity in 바카라사이트ir devotion to work.

¡°Due to 바카라사이트 intensity of emotional experiences, effective emotion regulation and coping strategies were essential,¡± say 바카라사이트 authors. The participants said that having control over how, when and which emotions are felt and expressed enabled 바카라사이트m to manage any hurdles and challenges day to day.

The investigators added that 바카라사이트 scientists also helped to regulate 바카라사이트 emotional state of co-workers, for example when o바카라사이트rs had a paper or grant application rejected.

Dr Ara¨²jo and her colleagues found that 바카라사이트 top scientists 바카라사이트y interviewed dedicated at least 10 hours a day to 바카라사이트ir work and described ¡°an intense commitment to 바카라사이트ir job¡±. ¡°All participants often worked at home in 바카라사이트 evenings and weekends, dedicating many extra hours of 바카라사이트ir daily schedule,¡± 바카라사이트y add.
