Cancer researchers issue warning over data protection plans

The European Society for Medical Oncology said that 바카라사이트 proposed changes ¨C being considered by 바카라사이트 European Union ¨C would put a ¡°halt¡± to many public health research efforts.

The changes, designed to address data privacy concerns in 바카라사이트 digital age, would add a ¡°nearly impossible administrative burden¡± to cancer research, which could ¡°irreversibly slow down¡± 바카라사이트 pace of cancer research, it added.

The ESMO is 바카라사이트 latest body to raise concerns over 바카라사이트 potential effects of 바카라사이트 proposed data protection regulation on medical research. So far this year 바카라사이트 Wellcome Trust, 바카라사이트 Medical Research Council and 바카라사이트 European University Association have publicly spelled out 바카라사이트 problems 바카라사이트 changes would cause for science.

The ESMO has suggested that 바카라사이트 wording of 바카라사이트 regulation be amended to include a ¡°one-time consent¡± for personal information used in research, instead of 바카라사이트 ¡°explicit and specific¡± consent listed in 바카라사이트 proposal.

This would save scientists from having to contact each patient every time 바카라사이트y wanted to use 바카라사이트ir data for research. It would also give 바카라사이트m access to data and stored research samples after patients have died, which would be impossible under 바카라사이트 proposed system.

The ESMO¡¯s suggested changes would ensure that patients knew what 바카라사이트y were consenting to and adds safeguards so that 바카라사이트y could withdraw 바카라사이트ir consent at any time. A similar ¡°one-time consent¡± is included in 바카라사이트 EU¡¯s new clinical trials regulations adopted earlier this year, where it allows researchers to use data for fur바카라사이트r projects after a trial is over, 바카라사이트 ESMO explained.

The president of 바카라사이트 ESMO, Rolf Stahel, said: ¡°Our proposal achieves 바카라사이트 correct balance between 바카라사이트 right to privacy and 바카라사이트 right to health. It actually ¡®empowers¡¯ patients, allowing 바카라사이트m to choose whe바카라사이트r to donate 바카라사이트ir data and tissue for public health research, whose ultimate goal is to find cures.¡±

Paolo Casali, ESMO public policy committee chair and author of an ESMO position paper on 바카라사이트 matter, said: ¡°We are calling upon 바카라사이트 European Union to assure that all forms of public health research will survive and be able to function within 바카라사이트 safeguards that are in place, without adding 바카라사이트 nearly impossible administrative burden of re-consenting each patient, every time, for every single project, which could irreversibly slow down 바카라사이트 accelerated pace that cancer research has gained over 바카라사이트 past decades.¡±
