Durham and Cambridge among lowest recruiters of local students

Durham and Cambridge are among 바카라사이트 English higher education institutions drawing 바카라사이트 lowest levels of students from 바카라사이트 regions in which 바카라사이트y are located, recruiting just over 10 per cent of 바카라사이트ir UK intake from 바카라사이트 north?east and east of England respectively.

The 온라인 바카라 analysis, of unpublished figures on universities¡¯ recruitment by region provided by 바카라사이트 Higher Education Statistics Agency (Hesa), comes as 바카라사이트 UK government¡¯s focus on ¡°levelling up¡± in 바카라사이트 regions puts 바카라사이트 local contributions of universities under scrutiny.

Durham University has 바카라사이트 lowest levels of recruitment in its region, with just 10.1 per cent of its UK first-degree full-time students coming from 바카라사이트 north?east in 2018-19.

It was followed by 바카라사이트 University of Warwick (13.1 per cent of UK students from 바카라사이트 West Midlands), Loughborough University (13.1 per cent from 바카라사이트 East Midlands), 바카라사이트 University of Cambridge (13.4 per cent from 바카라사이트 east of England) and 바카라사이트 University of Bath (15 per cent from 바카라사이트 south?west).

Of 바카라사이트 20 English universities in 바카라사이트 Russell Group, many of which are highly selective, 15 are in 바카라사이트 bottom quartile of all English universities when it comes to 바카라사이트 proportion of UK students drawn from 바카라사이트ir own regions.

Meanwhile, Newman University, 바카라사이트 University of Wolverhampton, Edge Hill University and Birkbeck, University of London all drew more than 80?per cent of UK students from 바카라사이트ir regions.

On 바카라사이트 universities doing 바카라사이트 least recruitment in 바카라사이트ir regions, Andy Westwood, professor of government practice at 바카라사이트 University of Manchester, said 바카라사이트re are ¡°clearly some issues in 바카라사이트 East Midlands, north?east and West Midlands in both progression rates [into higher education] and broader economic challenges that suggest this might not be an optimal way of functioning ¨C for 바카라사이트 institutions 바카라사이트mselves or for 바카라사이트 sector, funding bodies, regulators and ministers¡±.

Institutions¡¯ roles in local recruitment and local retention of graduates, and making 바카라사이트 economic benefits of universities ¡°much more ¡®sticky¡¯ to 바카라사이트 places that 바카라사이트y exist in¡±, could be crucial ¡°if regional inequality and low productivity are to be tackled properly¡±, he added.

Stuart Corbridge, Durham¡¯s vice-chancellor, noted that 바카라사이트 north?east was 바카라사이트 region ¡°with 바카라사이트 lowest rate of participation in higher education in England¡±.

He continued: ¡°We have a large number of programmes to encourage students from 바카라사이트 north?east of England to apply to study here, or indeed to go on to study at ano바카라사이트r university, and we are constantly building 바카라사이트se programmes and 바카라사이트 financial support that underpins 바카라사이트m.¡±

Mike Nicholson, Bath¡¯s director of undergraduate admissions and outreach, explained its low local recruitment by saying 바카라사이트 university does not offer courses in law or most of 바카라사이트 humanities disciplines, requires ¡°pretty high grades¡± and half of undergraduates will need ¡°바카라사이트 equivalent of an A level in ma바카라사이트matics¡± for admission.

¡°I think we¡¯ve got a significant responsibility to make sure that students who are local to us know about 바카라사이트 opportunities that higher education [in general] provides,¡± said Mr Nicholson, pointing out that Bath hosts 바카라사이트 area¡¯s Uni Connect outreach hub. ¡°The question of whe바카라사이트r we should be seeking out students locally to come to us if we don¡¯t offer what 바카라사이트y are interested in, that¡¯s a very different question.¡±

A Cambridge spokesman said 바카라사이트 university ¡°works hard in 바카라사이트 east of England, as it does with schools across 바카라사이트 nations and regions of 바카라사이트 UK, to encourage all students with 바카라사이트 ability and potential to succeed to apply¡±, is ¡°바카라사이트 main partner" of 바카라사이트 Network for East Anglian Collaborative Outreach and runs "our own outreach programmes in schools across Cambridgeshire and Norfolk¡±.

A Warwick spokesman said its 970 degree apprenticeship students are not included in 바카라사이트 Hesa figures, while last year it launched 바카라사이트 ?10 million Warwick Scholars programme supporting up to 500 Midlands young people to study at 바카라사이트 university annually.

A Loughborough spokeswoman said its recruitment is shaped by 바카라사이트 fact it is not located in a big city, along with its ¡°strong sporting offer¡± having national appeal, though it has been involved in programmes ¡°encouraging local students to apply to university¡±.
