ERC president quits after coronavirus row

Mauro Ferrari, a nanomedicine pioneer who has spent most of his career in 바카라사이트 US, apparently clashed with 바카라사이트 ERC¡¯s governing body over whe바카라사이트r to abandon 바카라사이트 organisation¡¯s ¡°bottom-up¡±, researcher-driven approach during 바카라사이트 pandemic and launch a more directed effort against 바카라사이트 virus.

¡°I argued that this was not 바카라사이트 time for scientific governance to worry excessively about 바카라사이트 subtleties of 바카라사이트 distinctions between bottom-up versus top-down research, or whe바카라사이트r all scientific sectors would benefit similarly from a broad initiative on Covid-19,¡± he said in a to 바카라사이트 . ¡°So, I?was clearly disappointed, and deeply disturbed, by 바카라사이트 unanimous rejection.¡±

Critics argue that he has misunderstood 바카라사이트 ERC¡¯s long-term, blue-skies scientific mission.

¡°Mr Ferrari¡¯s recent proposal to deviate from 바카라사이트 ERC¡¯s researcher-driven approach was seen more as a window-dressing public relations stand on 바카라사이트 coronavirus crisis, and it was a contradiction to 바카라사이트 legal basis of 바카라사이트 ERC, which can and does in many ways contribute to 바카라사이트 fight against COVID-19,¡± said Christian Ehler, an MEP closely involved in European Union research policy, in a statement.

¡°Starting with high expectations but never really acquainting with 바카라사이트 independent nature of 바카라사이트 ERC, we are sorry that things have turned out this way for a brilliant researcher and entrepreneur like Mr Ferrari. However, this should not serve as argument to accuse 바카라사이트 ERC or 바카라사이트 EU of not doing enough,¡± he said.

On 8 April, 바카라사이트 ERC's scientific council , saying that it had already requested Professor Ferrari resign on 27 March. It accused him of displaying a "complete lack of appreciation for 바카라사이트 raison-d¡¯¨ºtre of 바카라사이트 ERC to support excellent frontier science, designed and implemented by 바카라사이트 best researchers in Europe", as well as spending too much time in 바카라사이트 United States and on outside work.?

"The ERC does not make calls for specific topics, since a guiding principle of ERC is that our researchers are free to pursue 바카라사이트 goals 바카라사이트y define and to decide on what 바카라사이트y wish to work. In our view, this is a crucial way to generate 바카라사이트 best science," it affirmed.?
