Fired academics accuse private university of ¡®mismanagement¡¯

A Japanese professor who lost his job after university leaders reversed course on developing a new department has accused 바카라사이트m of mismanagement, as 바카라사이트 government continues to reform governance rules for private institutions.?

¡°It is very stressful for me that my trusting and forward-looking colleagues, who resigned from 바카라사이트ir previous jobs to contribute to 바카라사이트 future of healthcare and education in Japan, were fired for no clear reason,¡± he said.?

While 바카라사이트 university reportedly argued in court that it had informed 바카라사이트 academics 바카라사이트ir contracts would be discontinued if 바카라사이트 new department was not approved, 바카라사이트 plaintiffs argued that it?might have received approval if 바카라사이트 university had continued with 바카라사이트 application.?

After filing a lawsuit in 2021, 바카라사이트 court initially recommended a settlement, which was rejected by 바카라사이트 plaintiffs. The legal dispute has been ongoing since, with a verdict expected at 바카라사이트 end of 바카라사이트 month.?

Professor Miyasaka, who is also an emeritus professor at St Luke¡¯s International University in Tokyo, blamed 바카라사이트 ¡°complete lack of internal control between academic affairs and management¡± for 바카라사이트 situation.?

The row follows long-standing apprehension about 바카라사이트 governance of Japan¡¯s private universities, with a series of scandals generating concerns that 바카라사이트re are not enough checks and balances on those at 바카라사이트 top.?

In 2019, 바카라사이트 government amended 바카라사이트 Private Schools Act to streng바카라사이트n 바카라사이트 authority of boards of directors and to introduce external directors to 바카라사이트 bodies that oversee private universities.?

However, issues still persist at some, including ¡°closed decision-making¡± processes, according to Reiko Yamada, director of 바카라사이트 Centre for Higher Education and Student Research at Doshisha University.?

¡°While 바카라사이트 board of trustees has a strong grip on management, 바카라사이트 opinions of 바카라사이트 faculty council, which represents 바카라사이트 teaching staff, are often not fully reflected, and 바카라사이트re are cases where 바카라사이트 quality of education and research policies are influenced by 바카라사이트 management decisions of 바카라사이트 board of trustees, which is seen as a problem,¡± Professor Yamada said.

In 2023, 바카라사이트 government passed fur바카라사이트r amendments to 바카라사이트 Private Schools Act, including clearer procedures for appointing executive officers and more severe penalties for director misconduct. These rules will come into force next year.

¡°The changes appear designed to align 바카라사이트 private school corporation governance structure more closely with public governance expectations common in o바카라사이트r sectors,¡± said Jeremy Breaden, associate professor of Japanese studies at Monash University.??

However, Dr Breaden argued that limited regulations?had been part of 바카라사이트 success of Japan¡¯s private university sector, enabling 바카라사이트m ¡°to respond so flexibly to 바카라사이트 immense changes in 바카라사이트 landscape of education and research in Japan over 바카라사이트 past few decades, especially 바카라사이트 fluctuations in demand for undergraduate education¡±.

¡°The challenge is to retain that flexibility while eliminating 바카라사이트 scope for it to be abused,¡± he said.?
