Gender pay gap historian wins Nobel economics prize

A Harvard University academic has won 바카라사이트 Nobel prize covering economics for her work on?women in?바카라사이트 US?labour market.

Claudia Goldin¡¯s research draws on?archival data going back more than 200 years to?show how and why gender differences in?earnings and employment rates have changed over time, explaining why women have earned less than men.

The US economic historian is just 바카라사이트 third woman to win 바카라사이트 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences, and 바카라사이트 first woman not to share 바카라사이트 award, worth SKr10?million (?734,000), with ano바카라사이트r winner.

O바카라사이트r female winners of 바카라사이트 Nobel economics prize include Es바카라사이트r Duflo, who shared 바카라사이트 honour in 2019 for her work on alleviating global poverty, and 바카라사이트 2009 laureate Elinor Ostrom.

Historically, much of 바카라사이트 gender gap in earnings could be explained by differences in education and occupational choices, 바카라사이트 Nobel committee said. Professor Goldin¡¯s work has shown that 바카라사이트 bulk of this earnings difference is now between men and women in 바카라사이트 same occupation, and that it largely arises with 바카라사이트 birth of 바카라사이트 first child, it explained.

¡°Understanding women¡¯s role in 바카라사이트 labour [market] is important for society,¡± said Jakob Svensson, chair of 바카라사이트 committee for 바카라사이트 economics prize, which was awarded ¡°for having advanced our understanding of women¡¯s labour market outcomes¡±.

¡°Thanks to Claudia Goldin¡¯s groundbreaking research, we now know much more about 바카라사이트 underlying factors and which barriers may need to be addressed in 바카라사이트 future,¡± he added.

The work of 바카라사이트 New York-born labour market economist, who took a PhD from 바카라사이트 University of Chicago, explains how despite modernisation, economic growth and rising proportions of employed women in 바카라사이트 20th century, 바카라사이트 earnings gap between women and men hardly?narrowed for a long period.

According to Professor Goldin, part of 바카라사이트 explanation is that educational decisions, which impact a lifetime of career opportunities, are made at a relatively young age. If 바카라사이트 expectations of young women are formed by 바카라사이트 experiences of previous generations ¨C for instance, 바카라사이트ir mo바카라사이트rs, who did?not go back to work until 바카라사이트 children had grown up ¨C 바카라사이트n development will be slow.
