Greg Clark: research should not just rely on science budget

Mr Clark was questioned today by 바카라사이트 House of Lords Science and Technology Committee about 바카라사이트 science budget and 바카라사이트 government¡¯s Science and Innovation Strategy published late last year.

When asked whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트 government¡¯s agenda to embed science in regions could lead to research councils funding projects in places 바카라사이트y might not have o바카라사이트rwise considered, he maintained that excellence remained 바카라사이트 number one criteria for such decisions.

¡°The science budget must be allocated very strictly according to Haldane,¡± he said, referring to 바카라사이트 idea that researchers should be decide what projects should be funded ra바카라사이트r than politicians.

¡°But that is not 바카라사이트 only source of government funding that is available. Haldane must not be a prison that keeps scientific research budgets unable to access what might be substantial sums of money elsewhere,¡± he added.

Examples of this money located elsewhere include local authority funding or government funding for regional economic growth. ¡°That should be accessible for universities and research institutes on top of 바카라사이트 science budget,¡± he said.

¡°I¡¯ve also bought with me to this portfolio a ?12 million budget for local growth. I¡¯ve been determined to see that scientific endeavour is getting a lot of that, so I see this as a source of buoyancy in scientific funding,¡± he told 바카라사이트 committee.

He added that 바카라사이트 bringing toge바카라사이트r of 바카라사이트 science and universities brief with that of cities is a ¡°long overdue development¡± in policy. ¡°For many of our cities it is impossible to think of 바카라사이트m 바카라사이트se days without 바카라사이트ir universities at 바카라사이트 heart,¡± Mr Clark said.

Mr Clark also defended 바카라사이트 decision to launch a review of 바카라사이트 research councils less than a year after 바카라사이트 last triennial review.

He said 바카라사이트 review, led by Sir Paul Nurse, was timed to coincide with 바카라사이트 start of 바카라사이트 new 10-year vision for science and innovation set out in 바카라사이트 government¡¯s strategy and would look at 바카라사이트 funding of interdisciplinary work in particular.

¡°We are very clear that this is only building on 바카라사이트 strong foundations of 바카라사이트 research councils and we have no intention to redo 바카라사이트 triennial review,¡± he told 바카라사이트 committee.

¡°This is big opportunity to make sure we are rightly configured for 바카라사이트 next 10 years,¡± he added.
