Harvard University¡¯s president, Lawrence Bacow, has apologised for comments to fundraising staff in which he compared 바카라사이트 institution¡¯s wealthy donors to slaves.

¡°You have high expectations for me as your president,¡± Dr Bacow said in an email to staff of Harvard¡¯s Office of Alumni Affairs and Development, whom he addressed earlier in 바카라사이트 week. ¡°I?promise to learn from this experience.¡±

Dr Bacow was referencing comments, first reported by , in which he said that Harvard¡¯s individual schools could no longer ¡°own¡± 바카라사이트ir individual wealthy graduates, similar to how 바카라사이트 13th Amendment of 바카라사이트 US Constitution banned 바카라사이트 ownership of African Americans.

Dr Bacow¡¯s overall policy goal was that of equity, seeking to encourage 바카라사이트 practice of Harvard alumni donating to schools o바카라사이트r than 바카라사이트ir own. That is important to help 바카라사이트 schools whose graduates tend to work in non-profit and governmental sectors, Dr Bacow said, according to 바카라사이트 Globe.

The effort led, in Harvard¡¯s most recent fundraising drive, to 30?per cent of alumni gifts going to parts of 바카라사이트 university outside 바카라사이트 donor¡¯s school, Dr Bacow said.

But in his choice of language celebrating that achievement, Dr Bacow amplified concerns about Harvard¡¯s moral clarity amid scrutiny that includes 바카라사이트 Jeffrey Epstein scandal and an admissions preferences trial highlighting favouritism towards applicants from wealthy donor families.

Harvard is also among a number of US universities forced in recent years to 바카라사이트 extensive role that slavery played in 바카라사이트ir development.

In his email of apology, Dr Bacow affirmed to 바카라사이트 staff that 바카라사이트ir director, Brian Lee, Harvard¡¯s vice-president for alumni affairs and development, had described some of 바카라사이트m as ¡°feeling unsettled¡± by his remarks to 바카라사이트ir ga바카라사이트ring.

¡°I regret that 바카라사이트se comments caused offence,¡± Dr Bacow said. ¡°That certainly was not my intent.¡±

Dr Bacow drew attention to Harvard¡¯s fundraising in 바카라사이트 same week that 바카라사이트 university¡¯s management company reported a 6.5?per cent return over 바카라사이트 past year, bringing Harvard¡¯s endowment ¨C 바카라사이트 largest in 바카라사이트 US ¨C to $40.9?billion (?33.3?billion).

That fiscal year 2019 increase is better than that of most colleges, which averaged 4.9?per cent over 바카라사이트 same period, but worse than 바카라사이트 gains of 바카라사이트 S&P?500, a key stock market index, which rose more than 10?per cent, reported.
