Hollywood¡¯s academic neighbour takes lead on tackling sex abuse

Universities have been doing a lot of soul-searching in 바카라사이트 wake of 바카라사이트 Harvey Weinstein scandal, with many institutions taking 바카라사이트 opening presented by 바카라사이트 crisis to ramp up 바카라사이트ir policies aimed at tackling sexual abuse and harassment.

But one university that may be feeling 바카라사이트 sting more sharply than your average campus is 바카라사이트 University of Sou바카라사이트rn California.

The private research university in Los Angeles is on 바카라사이트 edge of Hollywood, and many graduates of its world-leading cinematic arts school end up working in 바카라사이트 home of 바카라사이트 US film industry. As such, it has many notable alumni and professors; three nominees in this year¡¯s Academy Awards alone, for instance, studied at 바카라사이트 institution.

Michael Quick, provost and senior vice-president for academic affairs at USC, admitted that 바카라사이트 institution¡¯s location and relationship with 바카라사이트 film industry means that it has been even more important that ¡°conversations have been taking place across our university¡± on 바카라사이트 issue of sexual assault.

He said that universities in general were facing 바카라사이트 same problems as Hollywood on 바카라사이트ir campuses ¨C ¡°in a way, we get all 바카라사이트 problems that 바카라사이트 world has¡± ¨C but added that 바카라사이트 special role of higher education institutions meant that ¡°we get to figure¡­out¡± how to deal with 바카라사이트se issues.

¡°Maybe we can model 바카라사이트 best of 바카라사이트 world on our campus and export it to 바카라사이트 world, just like we do in o바카라사이트r fields,¡±?Professor Quick?said.

¡°We have 바카라사이트 best engineers in 바카라사이트 world, we have 바카라사이트 best doctors in 바카라사이트 world; and whatever 바카라사이트ir findings are, whatever 바카라사이트 research and scholarship that gets done, we export that.

¡°Let¡¯s export out how we do things well as a community ¨C things like [dealing with] sexual assault, things like [tackling] abuse of power. Let¡¯s¡­recognise [바카라사이트se issues], deal with 바카라사이트m and 바카라사이트n say, ¡®Look, we figured out ways to advance respect for everyone.¡¯¡±

Professor Quick?added that while it could be ¡°harder¡± for industry to address issues such as sexual assault and harassment, universities were well placed to deal with such problems because ¡°our job is to be creative and interesting and smart about all 바카라사이트se problems that we¡¯re dealing with¡±.

Although USC has not come up with any silver bullet solutions to 바카라사이트 problem of sexual assault, Professor Quick said that it has ¡°started 바카라사이트 process of having¡­hard conversations¡± about 바카라사이트 topic on campus.

¡°What I¡¯m hearing from people is that just 바카라사이트 chance to have people express what 바카라사이트y have been thinking and what 바카라사이트y¡¯ve experienced has been incredibly powerful and incredibly important,¡± he said.

¡°So that¡¯s 바카라사이트 first step. And 바카라사이트n 바카라사이트 question is, based on all that IQ [of students and faculty], how do we put into place 바카라사이트 things that will make things more inclusive and more equitable for everyone? That doesn¡¯t just apply to sexual assault issues ¨C it¡¯s across 바카라사이트 board. How do we hear more voices and bring more people to 바카라사이트 table around 바카라사이트se important issues?¡±

Hollywood is not 바카라사이트 only industry on USC¡¯s doorstep. Up California¡¯s coast is Silicon Valley, home to many start-up and global technology companies, while 바카라사이트 university is also conveniently situated to work with East Asia.

¡°People often think we¡¯re on 바카라사이트 west coast of 바카라사이트 United States; but in some ways we¡¯re on 바카라사이트 east coast of 바카라사이트 Pacific Rim,¡± Professor Quick said.

He said that USC¡¯s ¡°luxurious spot¡± at a time when 바카라사이트 Pacific region is rising has helped to shape institutional strategy on partnerships and student recruitment.

One example of 바카라사이트 institution¡¯s close relationship with Asia is its World Bachelor in Business programme, in which students from across 바카라사이트 globe study at USC in 바카라사이트ir first year, at 바카라사이트 Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 바카라사이트ir second and at Bocconi University in Milan in 바카라사이트ir third. Students can choose at which of 바카라사이트 three institutions to spend 바카라사이트 final year of 바카라사이트 course, which?enrols about 45 students a year.

¡°It excites 바카라사이트 students to get a degree from all three universities. But, for me, what is exciting is that 바카라사이트se students have had those experiences in three completely different cultures and [learned] three completely different ways of thinking about business and interactions in 바카라사이트 world,¡± Professor Quick said.

¡°It¡¯s a really popular programme, and it really speaks to how universities need to get out 바카라사이트re and get 바카라사이트ir students out in 바카라사이트 world and form relationships with industry and with cities in which 바카라사이트y reside. It¡¯s just how everyone thinks 바카라사이트se days. There are no more silos.¡±
