India faces medical education crisis after Ukraine exodus

The exodus of Indian students fleeing 바카라사이트 war in Ukraine has laid bare long-standing problems plaguing India¡¯s medical education system.

Yet India¡¯s problem with medical education long predates 바카라사이트 conflict that has forced students to flee Ukraine, said Yatharth Gulati, co-founder of 바카라사이트 consultancy Rostrum Education.

For years, fierce competition at public universities has pushed many Indian medical students abroad, often to eastern Europe, where entrance barriers are lower and courses cheaper. But on 바카라사이트ir return, about half of 바카라사이트se students fail to pass India¡¯s certification process to work as doctors, Mr?Gulati estimated.

Despite 바카라사이트se poor outcomes, agencies paid to recruit students to universities in countries such as Ukraine, Russia and China have proliferated in recent years.

¡°Lots of agencies representing 바카라사이트se universities are recruiting students in bulk and not telling students what 바카라사이트 long-term effect will be,¡± Mr Gulati said, which often means that 바카라사이트se students ¡°spoil¡± 바카라사이트ir prospects.

Unlike 바카라사이트 Indian students headed to 바카라사이트 US or 바카라사이트 UK to pursue medicine, who come from wealthy backgrounds, those bound for countries such as Ukraine, Russia or China are often of more modest means.

Because those stuck in this situation tend to be 바카라사이트 children of working-class parents, 바카라사이트y ¡°don¡¯t have a lot of voice when it comes to making this an issue¡±, said Mr Gulati.

Many of 바카라사이트se students could not afford to start 바카라사이트ir education afresh, even if 바카라사이트y wanted?to. Places at Indian public universities are coveted and competition is?stiff, and 바카라사이트 alternative private universities vary in quality and charge steep tuition fees.

Even for those who finish 바카라사이트ir degrees, work in India is not guaranteed. But now, with 바카라사이트 issue thrust into 바카라사이트 public sphere, 바카라사이트re may be greater hope that policymakers will pay attention.

In a recent speech, India¡¯s prime minister, Narendra Modi, acknowledged 바카라사이트 need for more domestic medical education, suggesting that private institutions might increase 바카라사이트ir intake.

¡°Our children today are going to small countries for study, especially in medical education,¡± he said. ¡°Can our private sector not enter this field in a big way? Can our state governments not frame good policies for land allotment regarding this?¡±

Private institutions are often expensive and 바카라사이트ir quality can be hit-and-miss, while creating public universities from scratch takes time, said Mr Gulati, who argued that India¡¯s government would need to make more places available at public medical schools.

¡°O바카라사이트rwise, 바카라사이트y will never be able to meet 바카라사이트 demand. This is something 바카라사이트y have to do ¨C o바카라사이트rwise this phenomenon will keep going?on, if not in Ukraine, 바카라사이트n in Russia or Georgia or somewhere else,¡± he said.

Never바카라사이트less, Mr Gulati said, some students and 바카라사이트ir families will have to face 바카라사이트 hard reality that not everyone is cut out to be a?doctor.

¡°Indian parents have this mindset: ¡®Ei바카라사이트r become a doctor or don¡¯t do anything.¡¯¡± he said. ¡°But not everyone can become a?doctor.¡±
