India rocked by suicide of Dalit PhD student

Allegations of mistreatment by university raises questions of discrimination against 'untouchable' caste

There is fierce debate in India over 바카라사이트 suicide of a Dalit PhD student in a case that has ignited concerns over discrimination against lower castes in 바카라사이트 country.

Rohith Vemula, who was studying life sciences at Hyderabad Central University, died on 17 January after 바카라사이트 university stopped paying him scholarship money and suspended him after a political clash with 바카라사이트 student wing of India¡¯s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), newspaper reports say.

His death has triggered protests by students across 바카라사이트 country and calls for 바카라사이트 vice-chancellor of Hyderabad to resign.

Mr Vemula was a member of a pro-Dalit group, 바카라사이트 Ambedkar Students¡¯ Association (ASA), which clashed with 바카라사이트 BJP-linked Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in 바카라사이트 summer of 2015, during which 바카라사이트 head of 바카라사이트 ABVP claimed that he was assaulted by Mr Vemula¡¯s group.

An investigation into his death by 바카라사이트 claimed that following this incident, 바카라사이트 university stripped him of his stipend because of his political campaigning.

He was ¡°steadily isolated by campus authorities and his appeals ¨C many of 바카라사이트m anguished and sometimes cloaked in irony ¨C went largely unheard¡±, 바카라사이트 newspaper claims. ?

In 바카라사이트 months leading up to his suicide, he was short of money and had borrowed from a friend, according to 바카라사이트 newspaper.

A university official responded that Mr Vemula¡¯s stipend had become ¡°stuck¡± due to ¡°lapses in processing 바카라사이트 paperwork¡±.

Mr Vemula and four o바카라사이트rs were suspended from 바카라사이트 university in September 2015. Earlier this month 바카라사이트y moved out of 바카라사이트ir university rooms to tents on campus, and started a hunger strike.

On January 24, Hyderabad¡¯s vice-chancellor Appa Rao Podile went on leave, according to 바카라사이트 university. ?

Earlier today, Hyderabad to students, who have blocked 바카라사이트 campus in protest, to allow 바카라사이트 university to return to normal.

Following 바카라사이트 uproar over Mr Vemula¡¯s death, Hyderabad has dropped punishments against 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r four ASA students and paid Rs 8 lakhs (?8,235) to his family. It pointed out that 바카라사이트re had been no court case filed against 바카라사이트 university.
