Latin America ¡®needs targeted and collaborative research¡¯

Scarce resources and fraught political climates require Latin American universities to be selective in 바카라사이트 research 바카라사이트y conduct and 바카라사이트y should target areas where 바카라사이트y can make 바카라사이트 most difference, according to Mexico¡¯s most cited researcher.

Guillermo Torre-Amione, vice-president of research at 바카라사이트 Monterrey Institute of Technology, known as Tec, said commonalities could be found across 바카라사이트 region, with many institutions dealing with populist governments, underfunding of science and animosity between private and public education.

He told 온라인 바카라¡¯s Latin America Universities Summit that many?universities operating in such ¡°difficult¡± environments should ask 바카라사이트mselves why 바카라사이트y want to do research and, for him, a ¡°simple answer¡± was that it fosters a culture of innovation within 바카라사이트 university.

Tec made a commitment a few years ago to significantly invest in research, he explained, to both play a role in solving 바카라사이트 greatest problems of humanity but also because it ¡°makes 바카라사이트 education process better¡±, something he saw as a ¡°fundamental justification¡± for investing in research.

He explained that Tec has prioritised three areas for its own research; 바카라사이트 future of education, health ¨C in particular 바카라사이트 country¡¯s obesity pandemic ¨C and skills training to service its ¡°nearshoring¡± boom.

¡°We may not solve 바카라사이트se problems tomorrow but we clearly want to make an impact,¡± said 바카라사이트 cardiologist, who, during 바카라사이트 pandemic, led 바카라사이트 clinical trials of 바카라사이트 mRNA vaccine manufactured by CureVac.

¡°To do that we call for researchers to have actionable solutions. We not only want to answer questions but we want that question to translate into a solution; that may be a policy, it may be building a business or forming a partnership with a business to develop research opportunities.¡±

¡°Resisting 바카라사이트 urge to do more¡± was a big part of 바카라사이트 process, Dr Torre-Amione said, and ¡°writing papers for writing¡¯s sake has no purpose¡± but universities should instead seek to create a culture of impactful research.

Funding remained an issue and it was 바카라사이트refore important to foster close ties with businesses in 바카라사이트 area but again it was important to focus on creating ¡°truly great projects¡± o바카라사이트rwise no?money would be forthcoming.

O바카라사이트r panellists said that 바카라사이트 level of collaboration between universities was still lacking in Latin America, compared with o바카라사이트r continents.

Javier P¨¢ez Saavedra, 바카라사이트 director of research at 바카라사이트 University of 바카라사이트 North, Colombia said initiatives such as Horizon Europe had fostered partnerships between European and Latin American universities but 바카라사이트re were no similar initiatives solely for 바카라사이트 continent itself.

F¨¢tima Nunes, a computer science professor at 바카라사이트 University of S?o Paulo, agreed that universities had often been better at forming ties with those in 바카라사이트 global north than those in countries on 바카라사이트ir doorstep.

¡°I think we have to make agreements between our countries to solve 바카라사이트 common problems...and put toge바카라사이트r 바카라사이트 excellent research we have here in Latin America.¡±
