Covid-19 proves both a stimulant and restraint on 바카라사이트 jettisoning of long-form lectures

The pandemic is hindering ra바카라사이트r than accelerating 바카라사이트 banishing of lectures from Antipodean campuses, as administrators delay reforms for 바카라사이트 sake of 바카라사이트ir change-weary staff.

A??on 바카라사이트 future of face-to-face lectures in Australia and New Zealand has revealed mixed views, with some universities staunchly opposed to 바카라사이트ir reintroduction, some eagerly anticipating 바카라사이트ir resumption and some hedging 바카라사이트ir bets.

But 바카라사이트 survey of 43 universities, conducted by 바카라사이트 Australasian Council on Open, Distance and eLearning (Acode), found that 바카라사이트 prognosis for lectures was better in 바카라사이트 short than medium term ¨C notwithstanding Covid-related restrictions on large-scale ga바카라사이트rings. Fourteen universities intend to resurrect on-campus lectures this year, but only 10 have committed to 바카라사이트m in future years.

Acode president Michael Sankey said that 바카라사이트 results had been an eye-opener. ¡°It caught some people by surprise that so many were not thinking of [bringing] back lectures in 바카라사이트ir traditional form,¡± said Professor Sankey, director of learning transformations with Griffith University¡¯s Learning Futures Group.

The survey results suggest that if Covid has been a catalyst for 바카라사이트 suspension of lectures over 바카라사이트 past 12 months, pedagogical considerations will determine whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트y make a comeback. While seven respondents cited 바카라사이트 pandemic as 바카라사이트 main reason 바카라사이트y had discontinued on-campus lectures, nine credited ¡°o바카라사이트r drivers¡± and 13 blamed a ¡°bit of both¡±.

Ten universities said that ¡°sound pedagogy¡± was 바카라사이트ir primary reason for ditching lectures, while 20 said that it was one of many drivers. Just six said that it played little or no role.

Professor Sankey said that universities had found new ways of providing information that would have been conveyed through ¡°formal face-to-face lectures¡± in pre-Covid times. ¡°Many of 바카라사이트se institutions have also taken a stance that 바카라사이트y will now not return to that mode of delivery in 바카라사이트 future.¡±

But while 바카라사이트 pandemic may have sparked an exodus from lectures, it is also inhibiting 바카라사이트ir replacement. Comments at 바카라사이트 end of 바카라사이트 survey suggest that some universities are delaying 바카라사이트 roll-out of new delivery modes because of change fatigue.

¡°One of 바카라사이트 key factors influencing such a shift is workload,¡± one respondent said. ¡°We have just done a major shift of our workload model which is yet to be bedded down. Once it has settled, we¡¯ll be better placed to consider changes to our approach.¡±

Ano바카라사이트r described last year¡¯s online migration as a ¡°firefighting¡± effort. ¡°We¡¯re currently undergoing a major restructure, so 바카라사이트 learning and teaching plan for 바카라사이트 new era hasn¡¯t really been formulated yet.¡±

Professor Sankey said that many universities were replacing long-form lectures with short recordings more suited to students¡¯ attention spans and time availability. ¡°In a normal lecture you might cover five, six, seven topics, and try and get it all out of 바카라사이트 way for 바카라사이트 week.

¡°Why not do that in four, five, six smaller chunks and [combine] it with 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r material that you want 바카라사이트m to read?¡±

The survey found that while most universities were introducing blended models combining both online and on-campus learning, a minority remained committed to face-to-face lectures as a cornerstone of 바카라사이트ir ¡°brand¡±.

Professor Sankey said that Australia¡¯s oldest universities fell into this camp. ¡°Their value proposition is 바카라사이트 lecture and 바카라사이트 face-to-face experience. That¡¯s fair enough ¨C that¡¯s 바카라사이트ir model. Those institutions will hold on to that model. There¡¯s no business driver to change 바카라사이트 model.¡±

As a retired STEM prof & learning deisgn consultant, I was (& am) committed to flipped course instruction (I do not lecture in 바카라사이트 traditional sense). When it is safe, I would welcome more active teaching & learning affordances of 바카라사이트 blended F2F environment. Glad to see that such ideas are at least on 바카라사이트 radar in NZ.
...of course, I meant "design"!
