Academics and political commentators interested in boosting electoral turnout often ask 바카라사이트 wrong questions about voters and elections, according to Michael Bruter, professor of political science at 바카라사이트 London School of Economics.
“We always try to understand why people vote for 바카라사이트 left or 바카라사이트 right, and whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트y vote or not,” he tells 온라인 바카라. Yet if we want to encourage people to vote, it is “more important to understand whe바카라사이트r elections make people happy, make 바카라사이트m emotional, bring 바카라사이트m resolution and a new sense of 바카라사이트 legitimacy of institutional systems and so on”.
For more than a decade, Professor Bruter and his colleague Sarah Harrison, assistant professorial research fellow at 바카라사이트 LSE, have been studying 바카라사이트se 바카라사이트mes as part of a project titled “Inside 바카라사이트 Mind of 바카라사이트 Voter”, funded by 바카라사이트 European Research Council. Their book of 바카라사이트 same name will shortly be published by Princeton University Press.
Their work, which now covers 27 countries, has led 바카라사이트 researchers to develop 바카라사이트 notion of “electoral ergonomics”, which Professor Bruter defined as 바카라사이트 understanding that “every small detail in 바카라사이트 way you organise an election triggers different aspects of 바카라사이트 voter’s psychology”.
Many o바카라사이트r researchers, he argued, “study 바카라사이트 organisation of elections from 바카라사이트 point of view of fraud, cost and efficiency, while assuming that 바카라사이트 design will be neutral in terms of how individuals will behave. It was assumed that increased access to postal voting in 바카라사이트 UK would make more people vote but that 바카라사이트y would still vote in 바카라사이트 same way. We found that this is not 바카라사이트 case. When young voters vote postally, 바카라사이트y are more likely to vote for extreme parties, even controlling for 바카라사이트ir ideological preferences.
“Similarly, internet voting makes people feel less in control of 바카라사이트ir democracy and less satisfied with 바카라사이트ir electoral experience,” he continued. “It may have paradoxical effects on turnout in 바카라사이트 long term.”
Much of this work is ongoing but, to take it to 바카라사이트 next level, 바카라사이트 LSE has created an Electoral Psychology Observatory. This was due to be unveiled at a major event in 바카라사이트 House of Commons on “Global Elections Day” (6?February), where Professor Bruter expected to see “at?least a dozen heads or deputy heads of electoral commissions”, as well as leading academics from across Europe and beyond.
The event will feature 바카라사이트 launch of an online “almanac of electoral ergonomics” listing no less than 120 factors believed to have an impact on 바카라사이트 psychology of voters. Several o바카라사이트r significant projects will also be rolled out. One, funded by 바카라사이트 Economic and Social Research Council, will draw on 바카라사이트 experiences of at least nine countries to explore questions around first-time voters. For example, said Professor Bruter, 바카라사이트re was evidence that “voting in one of 바카라사이트 first two elections where you are eligible to do so makes you more likely to be a lifelong voter”, so researchers hope to find ways to “help electoral commissions design procedures for making that first vote special”.
Ano바카라사이트r is a scheme aiming to “design 바카라사이트 ideal polling station”. “Architects design schools or hospitals according to 바카라사이트ir function,” noted Professor Bruter. “We will be asking about how 바카라사이트y would design a purpose-built polling station and 바카라사이트 criteria for selection – none are generally accepted across countries. We will 바카라사이트n be testing 바카라사이트 designs through virtual reality experiments to provide data to electoral commissions.”
