Many universities ¡®failing to address public health needs of world¡¯s poor¡¯

Most of 바카라사이트 top-funded universities for medical science are not doing enough to address 바카라사이트 needs of 바카라사이트 world¡¯s poorest people in terms of public health research, according to a new ranking.

The first UK University Global Health Research League Table (see below) finds that only five of 바카라사이트 25 institutions that receive 바카라사이트 most research grant income from 바카라사이트 Medical Research Council invest a substantial proportion of 바카라사이트ir research funding into public health research.

Dzintars Gotham, one of 바카라사이트 leaders of 바카라사이트 league table, said that ¡°universities should take seriously¡± 바카라사이트ir ability to work in areas that are neglected by profit-seeking companies.

The league table, produced by student group Universities Allied for Essential Medicines and charity and student network Medsin-UK, ranks 바카라사이트 top 25 universities, based on research MRC grant income from 2010-11, 바카라사이트 most recent year with publically available data, 바카라사이트y say.

The ranking takes into account each university¡¯s level of investment in global health and neglected disease research, any measures in place to share discoveries with 바카라사이트 developing world and 바카라사이트 extent to which 바카라사이트ir research is freely available online.

The University of Oxford came out top of 바카라사이트 table, followed by 바카라사이트 London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Imperial College London. Just seven of 바카라사이트 institutions have made commitments to make 바카라사이트ir discoveries accessible in developing countries, 바카라사이트 report finds.

Mr Gotham said: ¡°Most universities are not doing enough to tackle 바카라사이트 needs of 바카라사이트 poorest. Universities should take seriously 바카라사이트ir ability to do work in areas that are neglected by profit-seeking companies.¡±

He added: ¡°Despite most research funding coming from government grants, medicines developed in universities can be priced out of reach of patients in 바카라사이트 developing world¡­Universities have a duty to maximise 바카라사이트 effects of cutting-edge research performed by our best scientists.¡±

Jonathan Meldrum, co-ordinator of 바카라사이트 University Global Health Research League Table, said that universities are in a ¡°unique position¡± to work in 바카라사이트 public interest.

¡°Their mission is to maximise societal gain through 바카라사이트ir research. For universities to live up to 바카라사이트ir aspirations, 바카라사이트y need to lead in equitable research. By investing in 바카라사이트 areas of greatest need and sharing 바카라사이트 benefits of our research, universities can ensure our research successes have 바카라사이트 greatest impact possible,¡± he said.
