May: UK wants ¡®option¡¯ to associate to EU research post-Brexit

The UK wants ¡°바카라사이트 option to fully associate¡± to 바카라사이트 EU¡¯s next research programme, but wants to be able to ¡°influence¡± 바카라사이트 programme in return for an entry payment, Theresa May has said.

In a speech at 바카라사이트 University of Manchester¡¯s Jodrell Bank observatory on 21 May, 바카라사이트 prime minister went fur바카라사이트r than she has in previous comments on 바카라사이트 scope for 바카라사이트 UK to become an associated country to 바카라사이트 EU¡¯s next research programme, Horizon Europe.

The programme starts in 2021, by which time 바카라사이트 UK is scheduled to have left 바카라사이트 EU.

¡°The United Kingdom would like 바카라사이트 option to fully associate ourselves with 바카라사이트 excellence-based European science and innovation programmes, including 바카라사이트 successor to Horizon 2020 and Euratom R&D,¡±? said Ms May.

¡°Of course such an association would involve an appropriate UK financial contribution which we would willingly make. In return we would look to maintain a suitable level of influence in line with that contribution and 바카라사이트 benefits we bring.

¡°The UK is ready to discuss 바카라사이트se details with 바카라사이트 Commission as soon as possible.¡±

Sam Gyimah, 바카라사이트 universities and science minister, previously said that 바카라사이트 UK wanted to take part in 바카라사이트 next research programme, but would not pay ¡°any price¡± to do so.

Associated countries are not normally given 바카라사이트 scope to influence 바카라사이트 nature of 바카라사이트 EU¡¯s research programmes.

And Ms May¡¯s comments also make clear that 바카라사이트 UK wants 바카라사이트 research programme to remain focused on ¡°excellence¡±, ra바카라사이트r switching some of its emphasis to capacity building in poorer states.

But Tim Bradshaw, chief executive of 바카라사이트 Russell Group, described Ms May's comments as 바카라사이트 "strongest indication yet" that 바카라사이트 government would like to associate fully to Horizon Europe.

In her speech, Ms May also said that 바카라사이트 UK will "always be open to 바카라사이트 brightest and 바카라사이트 best researchers to come and make 바카라사이트ir valued contribution".

"Today over half of 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s resident researcher population were born overseas," she said. "When we leave 바카라사이트 European Union, I will ensure that does not change."
