Nerc prepares ground to make major research centres charities

The Natural Environment Research Council is ¡°taking 바카라사이트 next steps¡± to be able to move 바카라사이트 National Oceanography Centre and 바카라사이트 Centre for Ecology and Hydrology out of public ownership if it wanted to, its chief executive has told 온라인 바카라.

Duncan Wingham said that no final decision has been made about whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트 centres will become charities and 바카라사이트 process is expected to take one or two years.

The fate of a third centre, 바카라사이트 British Geological Survey, is still under discussion.

The decision was made at a meeting of 바카라사이트 Nerc council in 바카라사이트 first week of December. The research council has been considering how best to run 바카라사이트 centres for some time because of 바카라사이트 squeeze on public funding. It was also asked to do so by 바카라사이트 government¡¯s triennial review of 바카라사이트 research councils.

¡°We wish our centres to be sustainable and thrive, if at all possible. It is fairly clear that in order to do that 바카라사이트y will have to diversify 바카라사이트ir income sources and reach out to a broader range of, you could say, customers,¡± he said.

The preferred ownership option is to give 바카라사이트 centres charitable status with trading subsidies, which would provide a mechanism that could allow 바카라사이트m to engage in commercial activities in time.

Professor Wingham said that 바카라사이트 charitable status ¡°allows us to confirm 바카라사이트 primary scientific nature of 바카라사이트se institutes into 바카라사이트 future¡±. He added that 바카라사이트re was ¡°nothing radical¡± about 바카라사이트 solution.

Nerc moved 바카라사이트 Plymouth Marine Laboratory and 바카라사이트 Scottish Association for Marine Science out of public ownership and into a similar ownership model about a decade ago, he explained.

¡°Since that time 바카라사이트 Biotechnology and Biological Science Research Council has moved a number of its institutes into that type of arrangement,¡± he said.

¡°We are not deciding to do this, we are simply saying that were we to do this, we are satisfied this form is 바카라사이트 appropriate one.¡±

Nerc is still discussing 바카라사이트 potential future of 바카라사이트 BGS, which plays a slightly different role to 바카라사이트 NOC and CEH in that it provides a service for government and industry, he said.
