Newcastle wins funding for offshore engineering centre

Newcastle University is to launch a new ?7 million centre for undersea and offshore engineering on 바카라사이트 site of a famous former shipyard.

The Neptune National Centre for Sub-Sea and Offshore Engineering is 바카라사이트 latest project to receive funding from 바카라사이트 Higher Education Funding Council for England¡¯s Catalyst Fund, which supports projects that promote economic growth and encourage private sector investment in higher education.

Hefce¡¯s ?3 million investment will be topped up by 바카라사이트 university and local companies involved in offshore exploration. It will be built on 바카라사이트 banks of 바카라사이트 River Tyne, on 바카라사이트 site of 바카라사이트 former Swan Hunter shipyard.

The centre¡¯s remit will be to develop new materials and technologies capable of withstanding 바카라사이트 deep sea environment.

Unveiling 바카라사이트 centre on 28 March, business secretary Vince Cable said 바카라사이트 development of such materials would be key to 바카라사이트 future of 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s economically ¡°crucial¡± oil and gas sector, and would ¡°drive up skills and develop 바카라사이트 innovations needed to fuel growth in 바카라사이트 North Sea¡±.

Project lead Nick Wright, pro vice-chancellor for research and innovation at Newcastle, said 바카라사이트 centre would ¡°significantly enhance¡± 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s research capacity in undersea engineering, and would provide ¡°a focus for 바카라사이트 development of both new technology and academic-industry relationships that underpin future growth¡±.

David Delpy, chief executive of 바카라사이트 Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, said: ¡°The work at 바카라사이트 Neptune Centre will build on existing expertise and capability to achieve critical mass in areas 바카라사이트 EPSRC has identified as strategically important to 바카라사이트 UK: specifically, 바카라사이트 need for fault-tolerant electronics and distributed computing in difficult and extreme environments.¡±
