Nobel Prize for medicine awarded to hepatitis C researchers

Three virologists who helped identify 바카라사이트 virus hepatitis C, paving 바카라사이트 way for treatments that have saved millions of lives, have been awarded 바카라사이트 Nobel Prize for medicine.

At a ceremony at 바카라사이트 Karolinska Institute in Stockholm on 5 October, Harvey Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles Rice were??바카라사이트 first recipients of 바카라사이트 2020 Nobel Prizes, sharing this year¡¯s prize for physiology or medicine.

The three scientists were judged by 바카라사이트 Nobel panel to have ¡°made a decisive contribution to 바카라사이트 fight against blood-borne hepatitis, a major global health problem that causes cirrhosis and liver cancer in people around 바카라사이트 world¡±.

¡°The discovery of 바카라사이트 hepatitis C virus revealed 바카라사이트 cause of 바카라사이트 remaining cases of chronic hepatitis and made possible blood tests and new medicines that have saved millions of lives,¡± said 바카라사이트 judging panel.

Professor Houghton is a British-born virologist who took his PhD at King¡¯s College London after studying at 바카라사이트 University of East Anglia. He is currently Canada Excellence research chair in virology and Li Ka Shing professor of virology at 바카라사이트 University of Alberta.

Dr Alter, a University of Rochester-educated virologist, is currently 바카라사이트 chief of 바카라사이트 infectious disease section at 바카라사이트 Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center, part of 바카라사이트 US National Institutes of Health.

Professor Rice is professor of virology at Rockefeller University in New York, and was educated at 바카라사이트 University of California, Davis and California Institute of Technology.

Their work was deemed to have made ¡°seminal discoveries that led to 바카라사이트 discovery of a novel virus, hepatitis C¡±, building on research done into 바카라사이트 hepatitis A and B viruses, 바카라사이트 Nobel committee said.
