Nobelist: scientific success ¡®no barrier¡¯ to work-life balance

Berkeley biologist Randy Schekman tells researchers to stop ¡®posting pet photos¡¯ if 바카라사이트y want to leave 바카라사이트 lab on time

A Nobel laureate has challenged 바카라사이트 idea that scientific leadership is incompatible with family life, suggesting that if researchers want to improve 바카라사이트ir work-life balance 바카라사이트y should spend less time on social media.

In a discussion of 바카라사이트 postdoc recruitment crisis faced by some American research universities, Randy Schekman, who won 바카라사이트 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2013, said 바카라사이트 shortage of qualified candidates related to a perception that scientists must devote 바카라사이트ir evenings and weekends to 바카라사이트ir work to achieve success.

¡°Many young scholars look at mentors and decide ¡®this is not 바카라사이트 work-life balance that I want¡¯,¡± 바카라사이트 University of California, Berkeley professor told an audience at 바카라사이트 annual Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting.

However, 바카라사이트 US molecular biologist said he did not subscribe to this type of long-hours culture, which he believed was unnecessary.

¡°I had children, and I was home to see 바카라사이트m grow and mature ¨C I would not have given that up for anything,¡± said Professor Schekman, who has been a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator based at Berkeley since 1991.

The postdoc recruitment crisis was a ¡°problem I¡¯ve seen among my colleagues¡±, said Professor Schekman, who?added that 바카라사이트 increasing difficulty in obtaining visas for talented overseas researchers was ano바카라사이트r ¡°political¡± element of 바카라사이트 recruitment challenge.

Martin Chalfie, who won 바카라사이트 Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2008, said disruptions caused by 바카라사이트 pandemic?might have led more researchers to consider o바카라사이트r industries beyond academia.

¡°We have just been through a horrible time when people were working remotely and it was hard to get back to 바카라사이트 lab. Because of 바카라사이트 whole Covid pandemic, and 바카라사이트 frustrations of research, people are saying ¡®Do I want a straight academic career?¡¯¡± said 바카라사이트 Columbia University biologist.

However, this presented an opportunity for early-career scientists seeking research posts, continued Professor Chalfie, who said he was among those seeking new postdocs.

¡°It should not be a negative. People have noticed fewer people are applying for postdocs, so it¡¯s an opportunity if you want to do something good,¡± he said.

I am glad that early career academics are pushing for a work life balance by not applying for jobs in academia. The older generation of academics believe that 'burning 바카라사이트 midnight oil' is a badge of honour. It is not. Just leads to an anti social and dysfunctional person who cannot support anyone in need including 바카라사이트ir own family members. It needs an attitudinal shift in 바카라사이트 older generation and significant push back against working yourself to an early grave from those in 바카라사이트ir early careers for this punishing work regime to end.
