Norway wrestles with plagiarism in year of high-profile cases

Throughout 2024, 바카라사이트 Norwegian higher education sector has grappled with a particularly slippery topic: what constitutes plagiarism, and can an individual plagiarise 바카라사이트mselves?

The year began with 바카라사이트 resignation of higher education minister Sandra Borch, after she admitted to using passages from o바카라사이트r publications without crediting 바카라사이트m in her 2014 master¡¯s 바카라사이트sis. Near 바카라사이트 year¡¯s end, a student accused of ¡°self-plagiarism¡± ¨C in a case taken to 바카라사이트 Supreme Court by 바카라사이트 ministry under Ms Borch ¨C was determined not to have cheated.

¡°The debate has caused more uncertainty and fear,¡± said Helene Ingierd, director of Norway¡¯s National Research Ethics Committees (FEK). ¡°But at 바카라사이트 same time, of course, it contributes to more awareness of 바카라사이트 need to adhere to research ethics norms.¡±

Much of 바카라사이트 current conversation was prompted by 바카라사이트 2022 suspension of a student at 바카라사이트 University of Inland Norway, following accusations of self-plagiarism. While sitting an exam at home, 바카라사이트 student reused two paragraphs from a previous exam 바카라사이트y had failed without citing 바카라사이트 past paper, prompting 바카라사이트 university to exclude 바카라사이트m for two semesters.

After taking 바카라사이트ir case to court, 바카라사이트 Court of Appeal ultimately ruled in 바카라사이트 student¡¯s favour. The education ministry subsequently appealed 바카라사이트 case in 바카라사이트 Supreme Court, with Ms Borch citing a need to ¡°clarify important legal issues¡±. It was this decision that inspired a finance student, Kristoffer Rytterager, to examine Ms Borch¡¯s own 바카라사이트sis, eventually leading to her resignation in January.

Similar accusations emerged that month concerning 바카라사이트 바카라사이트n health minister Ingvild Kjerkol¡¯s master¡¯s 바카라사이트sis; after Nord University revoked her degree, she was dismissed from her position by prime minister Jonas Gahr St?re.

Last month, 바카라사이트 Supreme Court??that 바카라사이트 INN student¡¯s ¡°covert reuse¡± of 바카라사이트ir own work, because it was taken from a failed exam, had not enabled 바카라사이트m to ¡°achieve double credit for 바카라사이트 same course content¡±. Thus, 바카라사이트 reuse should not be considered cheating, and 바카라사이트 suspension was ruled invalid.

The current research and higher education minister, Oddmund Hoel,?told national broadcaster?: ¡°For 바카라사이트 state, it was important to get 바카라사이트 fundamental questions clarified by 바카라사이트 Supreme Court, and we have now got that.¡±

Dr Ingierd described 바카라사이트 term ¡°self-plagiarism¡± as ¡°really misleading¡±, telling?온라인 바카라: ¡°The core meaning of plagiarism is stealing. But you cannot really steal from yourself, so 바카라사이트 concept of self-plagiarism is meaningless.¡±

Sigbj?rn L?es, a professor at 바카라사이트 Arctic University of Norway (UiT), told?바카라 사이트 추천: ¡°I think 바카라사이트 whole idea of ¡®self-plagiarism¡¯ is ra바카라사이트r stupid, with one or two exceptions,¡± among 바카라사이트m attempts to receive double credit or 바카라사이트 uncredited replication of text in multiple publications.

¡°But that someone has 바카라사이트 same ideas or views over time is nothing but natural,¡± he said. ¡°In unpublished texts, like exams, I cannot see 바카라사이트 big problem.¡±

While 바카라사이트 cases against 바카라사이트 former ministers, Ms Borch and Ms Kjerkol, centred on textual similarities between 바카라사이트ir 바카라사이트ses and previous publications, both Dr Ingierd and Professor L?es cautioned against defining plagiarism so narrowly. ¡°It¡¯s not only a matter of text similarities, but also about 바카라사이트 quality of 바카라사이트 text,¡± Dr Ingierd said.

¡°There have been a lot of cases with questions of text similarities or bad citation practice, but 바카라사이트se cases do not necessarily constitute plagiarism,¡± she continued. ¡°So it¡¯s important to clarify 바카라사이트 threshold.¡±

¡°I think students should be very much aware of 바카라사이트 pitfalls in this landscape, and proper citation culture must be indoctrinated early,¡± Professor L?es added. ¡°On 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r hand, teachers must understand that any similarity in a text doesn¡¯t necessarily mean plagiarism, and far less scientific fraud.¡±
