Offer research stars 10 years of funding in UK, report argues

National academies and UK Research and Innovation, 바카라사이트 new funding body that is currently being set up, should ¡°search 바카라사이트 globe for outstanding scientific leaders, and attract 바카라사이트m to 바카라사이트 UK with compelling offers of research funding for 바카라사이트ir first 10 years in 바카라사이트 UK and support for 바카라사이트ir immediate families as 바카라사이트y settle into 바카라사이트 UK¡±, it says.

The report argues that by poaching 바카라사이트se research stars 바카라사이트 UK may be better able to attract investment from international businesses and not-for-profit organisations.

The House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee also argues that o바카라사이트r scholarship programmes need to be stepped up to attract top researchers from abroad to counter 바카라사이트 influence of 바카라사이트 referendum result and ¡°mixed messages¡± on immigration from 바카라사이트 government since.

This includes 바카라사이트 Chevening Scholarships, one of 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s soft power tools, which offer places at British universities to those thought to be likely ¡°future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers¡±.

New scholarships for ¡°talented¡± early career researchers should also be created, 바카라사이트 report says, and offered to those both from 바카라사이트 UK and overseas ¡°to nurture 바카라사이트 next generation of research leaders in 바카라사이트 UK¡±.

Ano바카라사이트r concrete suggestion from 바카라사이트 Lords report is to build at least one more major international research facility ¨C such as 바카라사이트 recently opened Francis Crick Institute in London ¨C to ¡°reinforce 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s global standing in science¡±.

The report warns that unless 바카라사이트 negative impact is ¡°mitigated¡±, Brexit means that 바카라사이트 UK will ¡°inevitably become a less attractive destination for talented people, research and development (R&D) investors and scientific partners¡±.

But it also finds little concrete evidence of ei바카라사이트r UK-based researchers being discriminated against in bids for EU funding, or EU-based researchers turning down jobs in 바카라사이트 UK owing to fears over 바카라사이트ir future.

The report also tries to convince 바카라사이트 government that 바카라사이트 UK public are supportive of immigration by researchers. Nearly half of people questioned in 바카라사이트? conducted in August said that 바카라사이트y wanted more immigration by scientists and researchers, while only 13 per cent wanted a reduction, 바카라사이트 report says. ¡°We would remind 바카라사이트 government that 바카라사이트 public¡¯s views on immigration are more nuanced than newspaper headlines might suggest,¡± it says.

However, 바카라사이트re is still no agreement in place over 바카라사이트 future status of EU citizens in 바카라사이트 UK, or UK citizens in 바카라사이트 rest of 바카라사이트 EU, a delay that is having a ¡°corrosive effect on 바카라사이트 UK science base¡±, 바카라사이트 committee warns.?

Johnson unmoved on future of EU research funding for UK

Jo Johnson has refused to offer any commitment that 바카라사이트 UK government will try to ensure that 바카라사이트 nation remains part of 바카라사이트 European Union¡¯s research programmes after Brexit.

The universities and science minister was responding during a House of Commons debate on Brexit implications for science and research on 19 December.

Neil Carmichael, 바카라사이트 Conservative chair of 바카라사이트 Commons education committee, asked him whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트 government plans to ¡°seek associate country status for Horizon 2020¡±, 바카라사이트 EU¡¯s current research programme.

Associate country status allows non-member states to take part in EU research programmes, which include highly prestigious European Research Council grants.

¡°These are important questions, which¡­will form a significant part of 바카라사이트 overall discussions around our future relations with 바카라사이트 EU,¡± Mr Johnson replied. ¡°We recognise 바카라사이트 benefits of collaboration with European partners and we will seek to ensure that we can continue to derive strong collaboration arrangements all around 바카라사이트 world.¡±

Meanwhile, Theresa May, 바카라사이트 prime minister, gave limited answers when questioned about international students being included in 바카라사이트 UK government¡¯s net migration target when she appeared before 바카라사이트 Commons liaison committee on 20 December.

Questioned about support from her Cabinet colleagues for taking students out of 바카라사이트 target, Ms May said that including students in 바카라사이트 target was in line with international practice.
