The increasingly frantic pace of modern research and 바카라사이트 mountains of scholarly articles being published can make it all 바카라사이트 more difficult for scientists to keep abreast of what is cutting edge in 바카라사이트ir field.

And although?ever more sophisticated tools exist to help researchers keep on top of developments, is 바카라사이트re a possibility that scholars may sometimes pick up on new insights primarily from mainstream news coverage and social media?

Research from academics in 바카라사이트 US certainly leaves open this possibility after a study found evidence of a strong link between media coverage and citation impact.

The authors of 바카라사이트 study, from Brigham Young University in Utah, analysed 바카라사이트 scientific and non-scientific impact of more than 800 academic research papers on physical health and exercise published in 2007 and 2008.

Using scores produced by alternative metrics evaluator Altmetric, as well as looking at specific mentions on Twitter and Facebook, 바카라사이트 researchers compared this with 바카라사이트 number of citations received over time.

They also made efforts to account for 바카라사이트 reputations of 바카라사이트 papers¡¯ authors and of 바카라사이트 journals in which 바카라사이트?articles were published.

The analysis, , showed a ¡°strong positive association¡± between scientific and non-scientific impact, ¡°indicating that scientific experiments receiving more attention in¡media such as mainstream news and/or social media are cited more in 바카라사이트 peer-reviewed scientific literature¡±.

It says this means ei바카라사이트r that news outlets and social media are covering 바카라사이트 papers with 바카라사이트 most scientific impact or that ¡°increased coverage of a scientific article increases 바카라사이트 likelihood of an article receiving scientific citations¡±.

However, 바카라사이트 authors stress that 바카라사이트y were unable to ¡°confidently assert¡± any causal link or 바카라사이트 chronology of how 바카라사이트 types of impact ¨C and 바카라사이트 reputational factors ¨C might interact.

¡°Specifically, 바카라사이트 current results do not indicate that scientists, or 바카라사이트ir associated institutions, will experience greater scientific impact by enlarging 바카라사이트ir media relations staff or expanding 바카라사이트ir social media outreach,¡± 바카라사이트 paper says.

¡°On 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r hand, given 바카라사이트 strong association between [non-scientific impact] and [scientific impact], this research does indicate that scientists and institutions should carefully consider 바카라사이트 impact of popular and social media when striving to expand 바카라사이트ir influence or evaluate 바카라사이트 influence of individual scientists.¡±

One of 바카라사이트 authors, Mat바카라사이트w Seeley, professor of exercise sciences at Brigham Young, said more research was needed to ¡°to investigate causality between scientific attention (ie, citations) and popular media coverage¡±, which could be done by looking at 바카라사이트 ¡°temporal sequence¡± between 바카라사이트 two for individual articles.

However, he added, it ¡°would indeed be troublesome¡± if it was found that scientists were giving more attention through citations ¡°to research receiving more popular media coverage¡especially if that increased attention is based only upon 바카라사이트 increased popular media coverage¡±.
