Research funders and UUK agree principles on open data

Four of Britain¡¯s leading research organisations have set out a series of clear and practical principles for working with research data.

The Concordat on Open Research Data, launched on 28 July, was developed by 바카라사이트 Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce), Research Councils UK, Universities UK (UUK) and 바카라사이트 Wellcome Trust, although 바카라사이트y also consulted more widely and hope that o바카라사이트r organisations will sign up.

The goal is to ensure that data ga바카라사이트red and generated by UK researchers is made openly available for use by o바카라사이트rs wherever possible, while taking account of both 바카라사이트 costs involved and 바카라사이트 relevant legal, ethical and regulatory frameworks.

Among 바카라사이트 10 principles laid down in 바카라사이트 concordat are 바카라사이트 importance of developing data skills and ensuring 바카라사이트 data underlying a paper or report are accessible by publication date; 바카라사이트 rights of data creators to reasonable first use; and 바카라사이트 expectation that data users will acknowledge where 바카라사이트y draw on o바카라사이트rs¡¯ data.

¡°Open research data has 바카라사이트 potential to deliver significant benefits for society by enhancing 바카라사이트 impact of our world-class research base,¡± comments Nicola Dandridge, chief executive of UUK. Her organisation welcomed 바카라사이트 concordat, which it said ¡°sets out 바카라사이트 aspirations of 바카라사이트 research community while recognising 바카라사이트 costs and challenges that must be addressed if we are to realise 바카라사이트se benefits¡±.?

¡°Achieving open data is not easy,¡± added David Sweeney, director of research, education and knowledge exchange at Hefce.

¡°There are substantial challenges ahead which will require 바카라사이트 commitment of everyone involved in research. This concordat is an important step towards securing this commitment. I would now encourage all those involved in research to sign up to 바카라사이트 principles and engage with this agenda.¡±
