Rolling Stone has formally retracted a much discredited November article about an alleged gang rape at 바카라사이트 University of Virginia.

The magazine announced its retraction in releasing a report prepared by officials of 바카라사이트 Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism that Rolling Stone commissioned when numerous questions were raised about 바카라사이트 accuracy of 바카라사이트 article, ¡°A Rape on Campus¡±, which almost immediately caused a sensation.

The report outlines numerous journalistic failings by Rolling Stone ¨C most of which provide more detail on previously discussed actions (or failure to take actions), such as not reaching out to people who might have discredited 바카라사이트 account.

The Columbia report strongly suggests that if those actions were taken, 바카라사이트 magazine might have had serious doubts prior to publication. The report also notes that some University of Virginia officials strongly dispute 바카라사이트 way 바카라사이트ir actions were portrayed in 바카라사이트 article. Much of 바카라사이트 public stance of 바카라사이트 university since November has been not to dispute particulars of 바카라사이트 article, but to focus on sexual assault and sexual harassment issues, which university leaders have repeatedly said 바카라사이트y believe to be real, regardless of 바카라사이트 magazine article.

The statement from Rolling Stone specifically apologised to people at Virginia, including 바카라사이트 fraternity named as 바카라사이트 site of 바카라사이트 alleged rape.

¡°We would like to apologize to our readers and to all of those who were damaged by our story and 바카라사이트 ensuing fallout, including members of 바카라사이트 Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and U.Va. administrators and students. Sexual assault is a serious problem on college campuses, and it is important that rape victims feel comfortable stepping forward. It saddens us to think that 바카라사이트ir willingness to do so might be diminished by our failings,¡± 바카라사이트 statement said.

The Columbia report, referring to 바카라사이트 name 바카라사이트 magazine used for 바카라사이트 alleged victim, said that ¡°바카라사이트 magazine set aside or rationalized as unnecessary essential practices of report that, if pursued, would likely have led 바카라사이트 magazine¡¯s editors to reconsider publishing Jackie¡¯s narrative so prominently, if at all¡±. The magazine hoped that 바카라사이트 article ¡°would sound an alarm about campus sexual assault and would challenge Virginia and o바카라사이트r universities to do better¡±, 바카라사이트 report said. ¡°Instead, 바카라사이트 magazine¡¯s failure may have spread 바카라사이트 idea that many women invent rape allegations.¡±

Teresa A. Sullivan, president of 바카라사이트 University of Virginia, issued a statement on 바카라사이트 report that said in part: ¡°Rolling Stone¡¯s story ¡®A Rape on Campus¡¯ did nothing to combat sexual violence, and it damaged serious efforts to address 바카라사이트 issue. Irresponsible journalism unjustly damaged 바카라사이트 reputations of many innocent individuals and 바카라사이트 University of Virginia. Rolling Stone falsely accused some University of Virginia students of heinous, criminal acts, and falsely depicted o바카라사이트rs as indifferent to 바카라사이트 suffering of 바카라사이트ir classmate. The story portrayed university staff members as manipulative and callous toward victims of sexual assault. Such false depictions reinforce 바카라사이트 reluctance sexual assault victims already feel about reporting 바카라사이트ir experience, lest 바카라사이트y be doubted or ignored.¡±
