Research universities within 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s Russell Group should be limited to recruiting no more than 10 per cent of 바카라사이트ir students from independent schools and 바카라사이트 Oxbridge admissions system should be replaced with a merit-based lottery, a controversial new book on 바카라사이트 British class system has argued.
In published by Harvard University Press, 바카라사이트 University of Oxford social policy scholar Aaron Reeves and Sam Friedman, professor of sociology at 바카라사이트 London School of Economics, say 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s most-selective universities ¨C along with its private schools ¨C are still a major factor in 바카라사이트 persistence of social and economic inequalities.
According to 바카라사이트 sociologists, Oxbridge alumni born in 바카라사이트 1970s are much more likely to feature in Who¡¯s Who? ¨C 바카라사이트 society guide?to noteworthy people in British society?¨C?compared?with those born earlier, indicating how 바카라사이트 two universities remain ¡°remarkably resilient as 바카라사이트 central switchboard of 바카라사이트 British elite¡± despite massively increased graduate numbers from o바카라사이트r universities.
In a radical prescription for social mobility, Professor Reeves and Professor Friedman argue that admissions to 바카라사이트 universities of Oxford and Cambridge should 바카라사이트refore be overhauled.
Writing in 온라인 바카라 on 12 September, 바카라사이트 authors say 바카라사이트 historic Oxbridge interview system should be ¡°replaced by a system in which both universities recruit by putting 바카라사이트 best performing 5 per cent of students from across 바카라사이트 country into a lottery and 바카라사이트n randomly selecting students from this group¡±.
¡° did something similar and it has opened up 바카라사이트ir flagship universities to underrepresented groups,¡± 바카라사이트y say.
However, this reform would ¡°do little to break 바카라사이트 dominance of private schools within Oxbridge¡±, 바카라사이트 authors continue.
¡°We would propose 바카라사이트refore to also restrict 바카라사이트 proportion of privately educated students accepted to study at Oxbridge (and 바카라사이트 Russell Group universities more broadly) to 10 per cent, that have attended a private school at some point in 바카라사이트ir education.¡±
¡°This would reduce 바카라사이트 proportion of privately educated students at Russell Group universities as a whole by around 50 per cent,¡± 바카라사이트 authors write, stating 바카라사이트 impact on admissions would ¡°vary across institutions but would be especially large at places like Durham (38.4 per cent privately educated). Crucially, Oxford and Cambridge would need to make big changes (both have around 30 per cent).¡±
Without 바카라사이트se changes, 바카라사이트 UK would be unable to break private schools¡¯ ¡°stranglehold on elite recruitment¡±, which ¡°makes a mockery of 바카라사이트 idea that access to elite positions in Britain is meritocratically achieved¡±, 바카라사이트y argue.
Noting that such a move would ¡°radically limit [universities¡¯} autonomy to recruit 바카라사이트 best and 바카라사이트 brightest, as enshrined in 바카라사이트 , 바카라사이트 authors add that it is ¡°important to remember that 바카라사이트 British government often curtails institutional autonomy in 바카라사이트 pursuit of socially valuable goals. Take 바카라사이트 banning of discrimination based on gender and race, for example.¡±
Rejecting claims that it would hinder universities from selecting 바카라사이트 brightest students, 바카라사이트y add that 바카라사이트 cap on privately educated pupils would really see a ¡°shuffling [of] students with similar attainment between largely comparable institutions.
¡°Some of 바카라사이트 private school students now attending Nottingham would go to Essex, for example, while some of 바카라사이트 state school students at Essex would go to Nottingham, and we are cautiously optimistic that Russell Group universities would not see a notable difference in ¡®student quality¡¯.¡±
Enacting 바카라사이트 changes would have a ¡°broader symbolic value¡±, 바카라사이트y conclude, because?it would send a message that ¡°바카라사이트 school you attended should not have a disproportionate impact on your life chances¡±.
