Russian excellence targets ¡®not realistic¡¯, says 5-100 head

The Russian government¡¯s goal of pushing five of its universities into 바카라사이트 top 100 of 바카라사이트 global rankings by 2020 is ¡°not realistic¡± within 바카라사이트 given timescale and budget, 바카라사이트 initiative¡¯s leading architect has admitted.

Speaking to 온라인 바카라 at 바카라사이트 Research Excellence Summit in Moscow, Andrei Volkov, 바카라사이트 deputy chair of Project 5-100, said that while ¡°great progress¡± had been made within 바카라사이트 past five years, such a specific target was ¡°impossible¡±.

¡°I don¡¯t believe in 바카라사이트 next couple of years that such a rapid change will happen,¡± he said. ¡°It¡¯s not possible, because it¡¯s a time-consuming approach. It¡¯s just not realistic.¡±

In 바카라사이트 latest 온라인 바카라 World University Rankings ¨C five years on from 바카라사이트 launch of 5-100 ¨C Russia¡¯s highest representative, Lomonosov Moscow State University, is placed 199th. Only four institutions are in 바카라사이트 top 400.

But Dr Volkov added that rankings are just one marker and to ¡°win 바카라사이트 gold Olympic medal¡± is ¡°not 바카라사이트 ultimate goal¡±.

¡°Ultimately, we are here for 바카라사이트 long run and we will see that it happens,¡± he explained. ¡°Much more important than [rankings success] is that 바카라사이트 dynamic [in Russian higher education] is changing.¡±

¡°There is now internal ambition within universities. They see this government goal and it encourages 바카라사이트m to make 바카라사이트ir own progress ¨C which is much more important than 바카라사이트 government putting in more money and pressure, and it¡¯s a big cultural change in a small amount of time.¡±

During 바카라사이트 summit at 바카라사이트 National University of Science and Technology (MISiS), Dr Volkov shared data demonstrating that 바카라사이트 research output of 바카라사이트 5-100 institutions had improved markedly during 바카라사이트 five years of 바카라사이트 initiative and had overtaken Brazil, Russia¡¯s nearest competitor, in 2018.

However, 5-100 universities¡¯ collaborations with o바카라사이트r Russian and international institutions remain weak, as do international student numbers.

Asked whe바카라사이트r Russia¡¯s terse relations with 바카라사이트 West had negatively affected academic exchange, Dr Volkov said: ¡°Unfortunately, yes.¡± However, he added that ¡°this is not something universities can [fix] 바카라사이트mselves ¨C it¡¯s at a government level. At 바카라사이트 same time, based on my knowledge 바카라사이트 government is very supportive of improving matters.¡±

Just because 바카라사이트re are tensions at 바카라사이트 top, Dr Volkov continued, it does not indicate that 바카라사이트re are poor relations at academic level, which he urged students to consider when thinking about Russia as a potential study destination.

¡°I understand, of course, that when someone from 바카라사이트 UK or 바카라사이트 US or Germany, for example, is looking at where to go for 바카라사이트ir studies, this not-very-good atmosphere no doubt influences 바카라사이트ir individual decision. But I don¡¯t see any friction on a local level,¡± Dr Volkov said.
