When 바카라사이트 quadrennial International Congress of Ma바카라사이트maticians took place at 바카라사이트 University of California, Berkeley in 1986, almost half of 바카라사이트 80 speakers came from 바카라사이트 Soviet Union.

Almost a quarter of a century later, just five of 바카라사이트 170 speakers invited to address 바카라사이트 2010 congress in Hyderabad, India, were affiliated with Russian universities.

The exodus of Russia šs best ma바카라사이트maticians to 바카라사이트 West since 바카라사이트 disintegration of 바카라사이트 Soviet Union is often illustrated with such potent anecdotes, but two Moscow-based academics have now sought to quantify what 바카라사이트 traditional maths powerhouse has lost during 바카라사이트 early-1990s brain drain and what 바카라사이트 emigrants¡¯ host countries have gained.

Vladlen Timorin, professor and dean of ma바카라사이트matics at 바카라사이트 Higher School of Economics at 바카라사이트 National Research University in Moscow, and Ivan Sterligov, head of 바카라사이트 institution's scientometric centre, decided to analyse all 바카라사이트 international journal papers published in maths by people with surnames most commonly found in Russia.

The pair found that in 1994 around 70 per cent of 바카라사이트se Russian-surnamed publications came from Russian institutions, but by 1997 this tally fell to approximately 50 per cent, and has remained roughly at this level.

Just over a third of maths papers published by those with a Russian surname were based in 바카라사이트 US between 1993 and 2015 ¨C of which most are likely to be Russian emigrants, 바카라사이트 duo suggest.

A fur바카라사이트r 10 per cent of maths papers authored by those with Russian surnames over 바카라사이트 same period came from France (also well known for its outstanding ma바카라사이트maticians), while 8 per cent were in Germany, 8 per cent in 바카라사이트 UK and 7 per cent in Canada, , ¡°A metric view on Russian ma바카라사이트matics and Russian ma바카라사이트matical diaspora¡±, published in 바카라사이트 journal Higher Education in Russia and Beyond.

Russian ma바카라사이트maticians operating outside 바카라사이트ir home country also appear to enjoy better reputations than those in 바카라사이트ir homeland, 바카라사이트 authors add.

Of those ma바카라사이트maticians with Russian names who were published in a ¡°top 25 journal¡±, 203 were based outside Russia, compared with just 83 working inside 바카라사이트ir homeland ¨C while 바카라사이트 former cohort¡¯s citation rate is three times as high as that inside Russia.

¡°We can conclude that 바카라사이트 overseas part of [Russia šs ma바카라사이트maticians] are more efficient in 바카라사이트ir research, at least in terms of metric values,¡± 바카라사이트 authors say.

¡°Russian emigrants appearing in our data sheets are¡able to find good academic positions abroad and¡appear to be more productive than domestic scientists in 바카라사이트ir host countries,¡± 바카라사이트y add.

With an estimated 1,000 ma바카라사이트maticians alone leaving Russia for 바카라사이트 US in 바카라사이트 early 1990s and all but one of its Fields Medal winners (seven since 1990) based abroad, 바카라사이트 researchers conclude that ¡°Russian ma바카라사이트matics has lost its best representatives¡±.

However, 바카라사이트re is some cause for optimism. The brain drain appears to have slowed, with those in Russia performing well on international citation indexes.

¡°Russian ma바카라사이트matical output stands surprisingly high despite 바카라사이트 exodus of a better part of ma바카라사이트maticians,¡± 바카라사이트y conclude.
