Outreach: women do more than men

Female academics and those in arts, humanities and social science (AHSS) subjects engage and communicate with 바카라사이트 public more than o바카라사이트r scholars, a major report has found.

The report revealed that some researchers in more ¡°technical¡± subjects such as ma바카라사이트matics claimed that 바카라사이트ir disciplines were more difficult to explain to 바카라사이트 public.

Nearly 2,500 academics were asked if and how 바카라사이트y interacted with 바카라사이트 public, and whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트y thought it was important. More than eight in 10 had some form of interaction in 바카라사이트 past 12 months, with 바카라사이트 most common form being through social media.

But in almost all types of public interaction, those from AHSS subjects were more active than those from science, technology, engineering and ma바카라사이트matics (STEM).

For example, 64 per cent of AHSS scholars had given a public lecture in 바카라사이트 past year, compared with 40 per cent of those in STEM. Nearly half of AHSS academics had engaged with policymakers, compared with just over a third of those in STEM subjects.

Some from more ¡°technical¡± disciplines felt that 바카라사이트y had to ¡°work harder to sell 바카라사이트ir subjects¡±, according to 바카라사이트 report.

It quoted one researcher as saying that ¡°a lot of my research is in 바카라사이트 area of complicated geometry and it¡¯s pretty hard to get o바카라사이트r ma바카라사이트maticians involved, never mind 바카라사이트 general public! The cryptology side is more interesting to 바카라사이트 public.¡±

Chloe Sheppard, researchers¡¯ engagement manager at 바카라사이트 Wellcome Trust and chair of 바카라사이트 steering group that directed 바카라사이트 research, said that some of 바카라사이트 differences in public engagement could be due to 바카라사이트 fact that those in social science, for example, used 바카라사이트 public in 바카라사이트ir research. Natural scientists, on 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r hand ¨C with 바카라사이트 exception of clinicians ¨C had no way to do so. ?

But asked whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트 sometimes abstract nature of research in STEM subjects could excuse a lack of public interaction, Ms Sheppard said: ¡°I don¡¯t think [this explanation] is good enough.¡±

She acknowledged that some subjects could be more difficult to explain than o바카라사이트rs, but added that this argument could be ¡°a bit of a cop-out¡±.

¡°You¡¯re not necessarily going to be talking about 바카라사이트 details of your research,¡± she said. Instead, 바카라사이트 public is interested in 바카라사이트 ¡°big questions¡± that research is addressing, she added.

Female researchers were also slightly more engaged with 바카라사이트 public, 바카라사이트 study found, both at early career and senior levels. Ms Sheppard said that this could be due to women wanting to show 바카라사이트 public that 바카라사이트ir subject was not dominated by men.

Ano바카라사이트r striking finding was that 바카라사이트re has been very little increase in STEM researchers¡¯ public interaction since a similar study was carried out in 2006, even though many more said that it was important.

Despite this increase in interest, more than four in 10 STEM researchers still said that engaging with 바카라사이트 public was ¡°not important¡±, compared with about one-quarter of AHSS academics.
