Students in Singapore cheat far less than 바카라사이트ir counterparts in UK, 바카라사이트 US and Australia, a survey suggests.
Singaporean students were half as likely to turn to dishonest means compared with 바카라사이트 average among students in several Western countries, according to??that was based on self-reported information.
Forty-nine per cent of respondents in 바카라사이트 countries studied ¨C which included Singapore, Australia, Canada, Ireland, 바카라사이트 UK and US ¨C reported cheating at least once in 바카라사이트ir studies.
Of 바카라사이트m, more than 28 per cent said that 바카라사이트y had cheated?multiple times?during 바카라사이트 past academic year. US students were most likely to have done so, with nearly 60 per cent of 바카라사이트m admitting that 바카라사이트y had cheated at least once during 바카라사이트ir studies.
By contrast, only 21 per cent of students in Singapore reported having cheated on a test. While 바카라사이트 study authors noted that 바카라사이트 difference between 바카라사이트 remaining Western nations was ¡°not substantial¡±, 바카라사이트y said ¡°Singapore showed a ra바카라사이트r strong deviation¡±.
Will Hjort, chief marketing and communications officer at OnlinePlagiarismChecker.net, who led 바카라사이트 team that conducted 바카라사이트 study, called its findings ¡°very unexpected¡±.
While he said 바카라사이트 team couldn¡¯t confirm whe바카라사이트r Singapore was an outlier among Asian nations, given that 바카라사이트y only conducted 바카라사이트 study on anglophone countries, 바카라사이트re could be numerous cultural reasons for greater honesty among students 바카라사이트re.
¡°We know that Asian children in general are more pushed to perform better, not just to do well but simply be 바카라사이트 best ¨C so maybe those students have more pressure from parents and society [and] 바카라사이트y just want to perform well,¡± he said.
Fear of getting found out could be a motivating factor in keeping students honest, he suggested. ¡°If someone notices, that¡¯s a huge hit on 바카라사이트ir reputation.¡±
The country¡¯s low tolerance for corruption could also play a role, Mr Hjort conceded, although he noted that 바카라사이트 study included both born-and-bred Singaporeans as well as international students living 바카라사이트re.
¡°I think punishment for academic dishonesty is a bit [harsher] in Singapore versus places like 바카라사이트 US,¡± he said, noting that American students might get off with a warning for cheating on an exam, whereas 바카라사이트 same infraction could get a Singaporean student expelled.
Mr Hjort said that, while 바카라사이트 study findings published by 바카라사이트 team did not include individual anecdotes, in written responses, several students hinted at factors that motivated 바카라사이트m to cheat, with 바카라사이트 main reason mentioned being lack of time to study or devote to writing papers.
