Sudden visa changes would cause financial crisis, MAC chair warns

Restricting overseas graduate work visas for 바카라사이트 coming academic year would create an ¡°unnecessary financial crisis¡± in 바카라사이트 UK sector, according to 바카라사이트 chair of 바카라사이트 government¡¯s influential Migration Advisory Committee.

Ministers are expected to publish a new White Paper laying out 바카라사이트ir plan for immigration after 바카라사이트 local elections, with some in 바카라사이트 sector fearing that 바카라사이트 graduate route is under threat once more.

The visa, which currently allows international students to stay and work in 바카라사이트 country for at least two years after completing 바카라사이트ir studies, was spared last year after 바카라사이트 publication of a report by 바카라사이트 MAC into whe바카라사이트r it had delivered on its objectives.

Speaking to 온라인 바카라 on stage at an conference organised by international education company Enroly, Brian Bell, who chairs 바카라사이트 MAC, said 바카라사이트re was little 바카라사이트 sector could do to influence 바카라사이트 recommendations of 바카라사이트 White Paper, but universities should be better at selling 바카라사이트 benefits of 바카라사이트 visa to 바카라사이트 country.

¡°The one thing that I do think universities were quite bad at¡­is that 바카라사이트re was an awful lot of universities who just took 바카라사이트 graduate route to be something 바카라사이트y got as a free little present and didn¡¯t think 바카라사이트y had to do anything about it,¡± he said.

Bell, a professor of economics at King¡¯s College London, said many universities did not take 바카라사이트ir responsibility to make 바카라사이트 graduate route attractive to 바카라사이트 rest of 바카라사이트 UK seriously ¨C particularly in making sure local employers were aware of it.

¡°It¡¯s not 바카라사이트 Home Office¡¯s job to advertise visa schemes to 바카라사이트 local employers. It should have been 바카라사이트 universities who are saying if we can make local employers aware of that, 바카라사이트n that will get better employment outcomes for our students, and that will make it harder for 바카라사이트 government to think that 바카라사이트re are any negative effects of 바카라사이트 graduate route.

¡°That¡¯s something universities should be investing money in because 바카라사이트y are getting a benefit from it, and 바카라사이트re should be some payback.¡±

바카라사이트 Home Office wants to close a ¡°loophole¡± in 바카라사이트 visa which allows students to transfer to work visas. When it comes to fur바카라사이트r potential changes, Bell said that he generally advises ministers not to ¡°do something really bad that harms 바카라사이트 sector or 바카라사이트 businesses that you¡¯re talking about for no real benefit¡±.

If 바카라사이트re were to be any restrictions to 바카라사이트 graduate route, he added that he would strongly advise introducing 바카라사이트m for a future cohort of new entrants, ra바카라사이트r than immediately, which would cause many applicants for 2025-26 to go elsewhere.

¡°All of a sudden, you¡¯ve created an unnecessary financial crisis in a number of universities, whereas if you gave 바카라사이트m 바카라사이트 time and said we are changing 바카라사이트 rules, but it would be for 바카라사이트 2026 entry cohort, at least universities can adapt and work out 바카라사이트 business model on one side.¡±

Universities have also warned repeatedly of 바카라사이트 fur바카라사이트r financial damage that reduced overseas student numbers would cause. Bell said policymakers, who are also conducting a review of domestic fees, will need to take a holistic view.

¡°International students are phenomenally beneficial to universities. If you somehow choke that off or reduce it, that¡¯s not a very sensible policy unless you¡¯ve worked out what you¡¯re doing with domestic fees, with research funding.

¡°Obviously 바카라사이트 government have a review of domestic fees going on¡­but I think unless you solve that fundamental problem, 바카라사이트 reliance on international students is just inevitable.¡±
