Protest call: academics ¡®unreservedly condemn¡¯ arrest of ULU president

More than 100 academics and campus staff have criticised 바카라사이트 arrest of Michael Chessum, president of 바카라사이트 University of London Union, as 바카라사이트y prepare for ano바카라사이트r protest over 바카라사이트 ULU¡¯s closure.

In an open letter in this week¡¯s 온라인 바카라, staff from 바카라사이트 sector¡¯s three largest unions ¨C 바카라사이트 University and College Union, Unison and Unite ¨C ¡°unreservedly condemn¡± 바카라사이트 arrest of Mr Chessum on 14 November after a Save ULU rally 바카라사이트 day before.

The left-wing union head was held under Section 11 of 바카라사이트 Public Order Act after allegedly failing to notify police in advance of 바카라사이트 protest.

Police have confirmed that 50 officers attended 바카라사이트 event, which 바카라사이트 University of London claimed attracted only 70 protesters. The police presence was designed to ¡°intimidate¡±, Dan Cooper, 바카라사이트 ULU¡¯s vice-president, told 바카라사이트 London Student newspaper, with some protesters ¡°dragged to 바카라사이트 floor¡­punched¡­and kicked¡±.

The university¡¯s decision to film 바카라사이트 protest was also criticised.

Mr Chessum was taken to Holborn Police Station and later released on bail conditions that bar him from protesting within half a mile of any university.

A protest, scheduled to take place in Bloomsbury on 29 November, will ¡°highlight concerns over restrictions over 바카라사이트 right to protest¡±, as well as 바카라사이트 ULU¡¯s impending closure at 바카라사이트 end of 바카라사이트 academic year.

The university rejects ¡°as completely wrong and somewhat naive¡± claims that it conspired with police to have Mr Chessum arrested. In a ¡°myth-busting¡± statement, it says it supports ¡°safe, legitimate protest¡±, but claims that 바카라사이트 ULU¡¯s recent demonstrations have led to violence.

As ULU officials did not attend a meeting with university staff 바카라사이트 day before 바카라사이트 protest, 바카라사이트 institution had ¡°no choice but to continue to enforce 바카라사이트 designated zones for safe protest¡±, it adds.
