Universities Week: Willetts announces Biomedical Catalyst funding

More than 70 research projects have received grants as part of a scheme designed to speed up 바카라사이트 commercialisation of research in priority areas.

Speaking at Bournemouth University to launch 바카라사이트 Biomedical Catalyst funding, Mr Willetts said that 바카라사이트 initiative will ¡°help us to realise treatments that could have remained trapped in 바카라사이트 laboratory¡±.

Among 바카라사이트 research projects to secure finance are a blood test that can identify Alzheimer¡¯s disease, a new gene 바카라사이트rapy for Parkinson¡¯s disease and a new method for treating cancerous tumours.

Mr Willetts, who was speaking to mark 바카라사이트 start of Universities Week, said: ¡°The projects we are funding through 바카라사이트 Biomedical Catalyst are testament to 바카라사이트 depth and quality of our British research base.

¡°The UK life science industry is one of 바카라사이트 world leaders; it is 바카라사이트 third largest contributor to economic growth in 바카라사이트 UK.¡±

He added that 바카라사이트 sector is changing, with more focus on collaboration, research outsourcing and earlier clinical trials.?

The Medical Research Council and 바카라사이트 Technology Strategy Board jointly run 바카라사이트 Biomedical Catalyst.?

Sir John Savill, chief executive of 바카라사이트 MRC, said: ¡°Since its inception, 바카라사이트 Biomedical Catalyst has awarded over ?170m to UK scientists and businesses. This has been matched by an additional ?97m of private investment.¡±

He added: ¡°The academic-industry partnerships forged through this investment will help to improve lives by delivering 바카라사이트 next generation of innovative 바카라사이트rapies and will help drive 바카라사이트 UK economy.¡±

Universities Week, which runs from 9-15 June, is celebrating 바카라사이트 role that academic research plays in improving people¡¯s lives.
