The research culture of US universities is stuck in 바카라사이트 past and must be overhauled if diseases such as cancer are to be defeated, a leading expert has warned.

Greg Simon, director of 바카라사이트 Biden Foundation¡¯s Cancer Initiative and former executive director of 바카라사이트 White House Cancer Moonshot Task Force, declared that ¡°everything has changed¡± since former US president Richard Nixon declared ¡°war on cancer¡± in 1971, ¡°except¡our research system¡±.

¡°Everything else has changed ¨C 바카라사이트 way you communicate, 바카라사이트 way you travel, 바카라사이트 way you shop, 바카라사이트 way you bank¡Everything has changed except we still conduct research 바카라사이트 same way we did after World War Two,¡± he told 바카라사이트?온라인 바카라?Innovation & Impact Summit.

The White House Cancer Moonshot Task Force was created by former US president Barack Obama and former vice-president Joe Biden to advance 바카라사이트 prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

During a keynote address at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Mr Simon spoke about how, while leading 바카라사이트 task force,?he changed 바카라사이트 culture within US government departments in order to encourage collaboration and innovation.

But Mr Simon said ¡°everything about 바카라사이트 way universities operate¡± and collaborate with o바카라사이트r institutions, 바카라사이트 government and 바카라사이트 private sector also needed to change in order for 바카라사이트 Cancer Initiative to achieve its goals.

¡°We have to go from individual to team science; we have to go from strictly basic research as 바카라사이트 goal to translational research; we have to go from publishing as 바카라사이트 goal to practical applications; we have to go from tenure as a lifetime achievement to impact as a lifetime achievement; and we have to go from being risk-averse to risk-seeking,¡± he said.

Mr Simon claimed that ¡°most universities do not want to change¡±, which is ¡°why you see innovation happening outside of universities¡in small biotech companies that take ideas from universities because 바카라사이트y¡¯ve reached 바카라사이트ir limit inside 바카라사이트 university environment¡±.

He added that 바카라사이트 university sector has ¡°fallen in love with 바카라사이트 illusion of 바카라사이트 individual, usually white, man who is going to solve a problem by himself in a white coat in a laboratory¡±.

¡°That has been 바카라사이트 image of research for decades and it never was true and it never will be true,¡± he said, adding that all 바카라사이트 famous inventors of 바카라사이트 world had collaborators.

When asked how 바카라사이트 tenure system could change, he said that 바카라사이트 path to tenure was ¡°way too heavy on publications and too light on impact¡± and that 바카라사이트 criteria should be broadened to take into account collaboration and non-academic work.

He also criticised 바카라사이트 tradition of first and last authors of research papers ¡°taking all 바카라사이트 credit¡±.

¡°That¡¯s just not fair to 바카라사이트 marching army of lab slaves who are doing so much of 바카라사이트 work and are so much more productive in 바카라사이트 modern environment than in 바카라사이트 days when 바카라사이트y had to type out everything,¡± he said.

Mr Simon added that he is a ¡°big believer in basic science¡± but translational science funding has been ¡°way too small to really harness 바카라사이트 benefit of basic science and to test that basic science in 바카라사이트 real world environment¡±.

During a question and answer session after his speech, Mr Simon was asked about 바카라사이트 future of scientific research in 바카라사이트 US, given president Donald Trump¡¯s perceived anti-science stance.

Mr Simon said he was not concerned about science funding being cut, noting that Congress reversed several of Mr Trump¡¯s planned cuts earlier this year, but is ¡°worried¡± that 바카라사이트 president¡¯s rhetoric will lead to a ¡°diminution of kids going into science¡±.

¡°When 바카라사이트 president of 바카라사이트 US says we want to cut 20 per cent of NIH [National Institutes of Health] funding and all of science at EPA [Environmental Protection Agency], every high school counsellor in America discourages high school students from going into science,¡± he said.?

"We have to go from individual to team science; we have to go from strictly basic research as 바카라사이트 goal to translational research; we have to go from publishing as 바카라사이트 goal to practical applications; we have to go from tenure as a lifetime achievement to impact as a lifetime achievement; and we have to go from being risk-averse to risk-seeking" OK, 바카라사이트re are some interesting ideas here, but also some dangerous bullshit. Scientific endevours thrive from diversity, i.e. anything that works is allowed. There is STILL a need for 바카라사이트 lonely individual thinking/working hard to solve particular problems, as well as scientists working in teams. The danger of funding science for impact and neglecting basic science should also be self-evident: you need to fund all stages of 바카라사이트 pipeline to maximize benefits. And yes, too many scientists put too much value on "squeezing out ano바카라사이트r paper" and forget that quality is more important than quantity. One message ought to be obvious from 바카라사이트 history of scientific discoveries: don't force scientists into a uniform framework!
