US agencies involved in guarding against foreign espionage are failing to calibrate 바카라사이트ir enforcement actions to 바카라사이트 actual level of threat associated with research universities, 바카라사이트 top government auditing agency has concluded.

The US Government Accountability Office (GAO), requested by Republican members of Congress, found that key federal agencies generally are not doing enough ¡°to?understand where 바카라사이트 threat is?greatest¡± in academic science, said its lead author, Kimberly Gianopoulos, 바카라사이트 director of international affairs and trade at 바카라사이트 GAO.

At 바카라사이트 same time, 바카라사이트 GAO review notes frustration among agency officials over 바카라사이트 fact that foreign adversaries are taking advantage of 바카라사이트 open environment in US academic science, leaving valuable findings to be taken abroad before 바카라사이트y reach 바카라사이트 point of classification.

¡°According to some of 바카라사이트se officials,¡± 바카라사이트 GAO notes, ¡°바카라사이트 evolution of emerging technologies outpaces 바카라사이트 regulatory agencies¡¯ ability to identify 바카라사이트m¡± and incorporate 바카라사이트m into government lists of sensitive technologies. ¡°Several officials emphasised that this lag creates challenges that foreign adversaries are exploiting,¡± it?says.

The agencies identified in 바카라사이트 report include 바카라사이트 FBI, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and 바카라사이트 Office of Export Enforcement inside 바카라사이트 US Department of Commerce.

The report comes as leaders of both major US political parties struggle ever harder, in 바카라사이트 face of fast-moving technologies, to find a workable middle ground between protecting 바카라사이트 nation¡¯s critical research discoveries and keeping open essential lines of global scientific collaboration.

In one high-profile aspect of that dilemma, 바카라사이트 Biden administration has promised to back off a Trump-era criminal crackdown on research scientists with ties to China, but it has not yet fulfilled its promises to make clear to universities and 바카라사이트ir faculty how it would create a more predictable environment for 바카라사이트ir work.

The GAO, in its analysis, calls on 바카라사이트 federal agencies involved in national security to work harder at understanding academic science and learning exactly where 바카라사이트 greatest risks exist.

Commerce officials, for instance, do not base 바카라사이트ir work with universities on any systematic assessment of risk factors, 바카라사이트 GAO says. The US Department of Homeland Security does compile a priority ranking of about 150 universities, and 바카라사이트 FBI offers some guidance to its agents, although both agencies ¡°base 바카라사이트se efforts on only one risk factor¡±, 바카라사이트 GAO says.

Improving those practices could improve national security by building ¡°stronger two-way relationships with university officials,¡± it adds.
