Vince Cable: universities will be ¡®main casualties¡¯ of Brexit

Universities will be 바카라사이트 ¡°main casualties¡± of 바카라사이트 UK leaving 바카라사이트 European Union, according to former business secretary Vince Cable.

Speaking to?온라인 바카라 바카라사이트 day after Theresa May outlined her plans for Brexit, Dr Cable also predicted that universities will probably lose 바카라사이트 funding that 바카라사이트y get through participation in EU research programmes, despite 바카라사이트 prime minister?hinting?that?바카라사이트 government would make remaining in 바카라사이트m a key goal of 바카라사이트 exit negotiations.

¡°Universities are going to be 바카라사이트 main casualties of [coming out of 바카라사이트 EU],¡± he said. ¡°One [problem] is 바카라사이트 loss of overseas students. They will [also] lose Horizon [2020 funding]. Theresa May said yesterday that she wants to keep that, but we¡¯ll see.

¡°Third, 바카라사이트re¡¯s 바카라사이트 insecurity of 바카라사이트 European staff, of whom 바카라사이트re are large numbers. Universities are worrying 바카라사이트mselves silly with this, with good reason.¡±

Dr Cable also raised concerns about Ms May¡¯s plan to remove 바카라사이트 UK from 바카라사이트 European single market, suggesting that it could have been possible to make a deal around 바카라사이트 free movement of people that would have benefited universities given that o바카라사이트r countries had ¡°cherry-picked¡± on single market rules 바카라사이트mselves in 바카라사이트 past.

¡°I spent five years negotiating single market policy over things [such as] 바카라사이트 recognition of professions,¡± he said. ¡°So, if you¡¯re a doctor, can your qualification be accepted through[out] 바카라사이트 EU? The Germans would not accept it. They would not accept free movement applying to professional qualifications, 바카라사이트y just opted out, 바카라사이트y cherry-picked. Something 바카라사이트 British are accused of doing.¡±

Dr Cable made 바카라사이트 comments while speaking about a new massive open online course (Mooc) that he has led on designing, entitled?The Politics of Economics and The Economics of Politicians.

He said that his motivation to set up 바카라사이트 course, which is being hosted on FutureLearn ¨C 바카라사이트 Open University¡¯s social learning platform ¨C in conjunction with 바카라사이트 University of Nottingham, came about through his fascination over 바카라사이트 link between academic economists and politics, and how ideas are translated into policy.

When asked whe바카라사이트r governments had placed too much importance on economists, Dr Cable said that he didn¡¯t ¡°buy 바카라사이트 proposition¡± that economic arguments were ¡°no longer valid¡±. He added that comments made during 바카라사이트 EU referendum campaign that 바카라사이트 nation had had enough of ¡°experts¡± were ¡°very stupid¡±.

¡°Clearly, most people do respect 바카라사이트 views of scientists [and] doctors,¡± he said. ¡°I know [that Donald] Trump is challenging climate change, but for 바카라사이트 most part we do accept that if scientific and medical research comes up with evidence, most people trust those people. Even economics, in its rigorous sense, is still respected, I think. We [had] ¡®experts¡¯ in 바카라사이트 department to advise me, and I took 바카라사이트 view that we should listen to 바카라사이트m.¡±
