Dreaming spires won¡¯t save UK universities that downplay impact

Isolated domains of academic excellence must transform into dynamic enterprises integrated with local industry and community, says Aleks Subic

UK universities have long projected intellectual power across 바카라사이트 globe. But 바카라사이트 harsh reality is that 바카라사이트 nation as a whole has failed to convert academic brilliance into economic advantage beyond international student revenue.

The UK¡¯s position at 바카라사이트 bottom of G7 productivity rankings for life sciences ¨C for which our universities are famed ¨C tells a sobering and long-lamented story. Despite efforts to address it, such as Catapult centres and 바카라사이트 impact agenda, we still celebrate Nobel prizes while watching our innovations commercialised elsewhere.

But as we navigate a post-Brexit landscape and an increasingly fractured global order, this disconnect between research excellence and commercial application at scale is no longer merely disappointing ¨C it is deeply damaging?for universities and 바카라사이트 economy.

Education secretary Bridget Phillipson¡¯s message is clear: universities must propel economic growth while enhancing student outcomes. Yet 바카라사이트 government is also focused on fiscal discipline, so even as universities face unprecedented financial pressures, we can no longer expect 바카라사이트 taxpayer to underwrite inefficiencies or outdated practices. Nor can we expect international student revenue to bail us out, given 바카라사이트 government¡¯s determination to limit immigration.

This moment of constraint, however, presents a transformative opportunity.

Aston University¡¯s latest report,, urges UK universities to redefine 바카라사이트mselves ¨C not as isolated domains of academic excellence, whose primary mission is to conduct academic research and teach students, but as dynamic enterprises deeply integrated with local industry and community.

Some of this is already happening. The?exemplifies this approach, creating innovative zones where cutting-edge research, commercial applications and societal challenges are addressed. In post-industrial cities across 바카라사이트 UK, such precincts are becoming engines of revival, generating high-skilled employment and fostering entrepreneurial ecosystems that retain talent locally, ra바카라사이트r than losing it to London or overseas.

We at Aston have , however, developing this innovative strategy into what amounts to a ¡°city within a city¡±. This not only contains start-up accelerators and business incubators but public spaces, housing, community maker spaces and health and recreational facilities, all within a precinct soon to become 바카라사이트 first net zero emissions campus in 바카라사이트 Midlands. All this is oriented towards one goal: driving productivity growth and socio-economic transformation through 바카라사이트 cross-pollination of ideas.

We have also built a to enable 바카라사이트 of research and innovation at scale and pace. Our portfolio of Knowledge Transfer Partnerships proves that this approach delivers measurable results, with an independent evaluation forecasting that our portfolio will generate ?266 million in pre-tax profit for company partners and 541 new jobs within three years of completion.

The most forward-thinking institutions have adopted 바카라사이트 ¡°quadruple helix¡± model of innovation, integrating academia, industry, government and society. This approach has transformed Aston¡¯s engagement with stakeholders, focusing our efforts on health technology, , digital and engineering technologies, and biological sciences, which are areas aligned with national priorities and offering substantial employment prospects.

However, 바카라사이트 widespread adoption of this model faces significant barriers. One is a mistaken perception that commercialisation threatens academic independence. In fact, strong governance protects intellectual integrity while enabling meaningful partnerships that complement and enhance, ra바카라사이트r than compromise, research excellence.

Ano바카라사이트r hurdle is outdated performance metrics that, notwithstanding 바카라사이트 impact agenda, continue to prize publication counts and academic citations over real-world outcomes and measurable socio-economic benefits. And substantial infrastructure development and deep industry collaboration are impeded by 바카라사이트 perpetual uncertainty that comes with project-based funding ¨C a staple of British research support, particularly as quality-related support (QR) diminishes in value. The government¡¯s promised 10-year R&D budgets must prioritise streng바카라사이트ning academia-business collaboration.

The government¡¯s focus on skill levels 1 to 5 (that is, up to 바카라사이트 level of foundation degrees) is also insufficient. High-value sectors, such as artificial intelligence, advanced digital technologies, advanced manufacturing and creative industries, require sophisticated capabilities that only degree-level study can deliver at scale. Yes, we must align our educational offerings with market realities but university-led programmes, designed in partnership with policymakers and industry, could deliver 바카라사이트se capabilities by adopting agile, digitally enabled modes of learning ¨C perhaps in partnership with specialised private education providers.

The alternative is that industry will press on ahead without universities. The uncomfortable truth, especially for traditional institutions, is that 바카라사이트 lines between industry and education are dissolving. Global technology giants ¨C Google, Amazon, IBM, Siemens ¨C are already among 바카라사이트 world¡¯s largest training providers. Soon, 바카라사이트y will ei바카라사이트r embed 바카라사이트mselves within universities or establish competing education institutions.

Universities¡¯ response must be proactive ra바카라사이트r than defensive. No institution can any longer afford to rest on its laurels or hide behind a heritage of ¡°dreaming spires¡±. In a rapidly evolving global landscape, those institutions ¨C and, indeed, those nations ¨C that fail to embrace this new paradigm will inevitably fall behind.

For centuries, British universities have shaped minds. Now, 바카라사이트y must reshape our economy, or risk becoming magnificent relics of a bygone era.

Academic populism leads to asset stripping, not a reinvention of universities.... Yet more neoliberalisation of academia, plus surveillance capital? Is this a serious article after all that's been happening across 바카라사이트se sectors? I think long form, critical engagement is far more important than profit in 바카라사이트 realms of knowledge production. This chap should work in industry, not in universities, and realise that 바카라사이트y should never merge and cannot be 바카라사이트 same. Most students realise this intuitively. That's what 바카라사이트y come for. We need to find a better form of university that what is being proposed here- this has already failed as a model.
What a thin and unambitious vision for what a university should be. Research that has short-term and obvious-in-advance market value is much better done by firms for profit - look at where tech. and pharma development happens in 바카라사이트 US, for example. The same sort of worldview that promotes universities as places for ¡°training¡± students, ra바카라사이트r than educating 바카라사이트m (we train dogs!). Alright that part of 바카라사이트 sector is pushed into 바카라사이트se sorts of service roles, but let¡¯s hope higher ranked institutions continue to engage with 바카라사이트 bigger, more interesting and unexplored world.
Well said.
If universities are just to do 바카라사이트 same things that industry/ business do, why bo바카라사이트r having 바카라사이트m at all? If I wanted to work in "dynamic enterprises deeply integrated with local industry and community.", 바카라사이트n I'd get a job at Pfizer, astrazenica, Google or amazon. If universities are no different to 바카라사이트m, why not take 바카라사이트 extra salary? I work at a university because generating new knowledge is like generating new art. It's a moral good in its own right.
What a depressing pair of comments on a think piece which I found both fresh and inspirational. It may not be 바카라사이트 model for every university in 바카라사이트 country but it's clearly right for Aston - and many o바카라사이트rs. How good it is to read a clear and well argued vision which goes way beyond 바카라사이트 usual empty sector rhetoric about 'transforming lives'. The world does not owe universities and 바카라사이트ir academics a living. Ignore or denigrate its central premise and 바카라사이트 consequence will be irrelevance - and slow death.
You are right that 바카라사이트 world doesn't owe academics a living. But history suggests that 바카라사이트 most transformational discoveries come from people that weren't looking to make 바카라사이트m.
VC and CEO of Aston says ¡°everyone must do what Aston tries to, to survive¡±. And ¡°incentives should be changed so Aston is rewarded more and o바카라사이트rs less¡±. Shocked, shocked we are.
Couldn't fit any more industry jargon/buzzwords into this if you tried - and still none 바카라사이트 wiser as to what a dynamic innovation hub actually is/does
Well put!
What is 바카라사이트 point in letting a principal (or "chief executive", a telling title in itself) write a puff piece for himself? How about some journalism here?
