POSTECH head: a university šs ultimate mission is to create value for society

The Industrial Revolution of 바카라사이트 19th century was a critical inflection point in human history. As well as 바카라사이트 changes it brought about to 바카라사이트 human basics of food and clothing, a revolution also occurred in people šs ways of living and working, accompanied by rapid urban development.

With 바카라사이트 advent of machines and mass production, labourers flocked to cities in droves. The newly formed communities and markets turned cities into commercial and financial hubs, which, in turn, attracted more people. Consequent problems such as air and water pollution and build-up of waste were gradually solved through technological development, and cities continued to grow. In 바카라사이트 case of 바카라사이트 UK, 바카라사이트 cradle of 바카라사이트 Industrial Revolution, 바카라사이트 population of London was less than 1 million in 1800. Half a century later, it had more than doubled to 2.5 million, and currently stands at more than 8.5 million.

But not all cities continue to prosper. Their fate is naturally related to 바카라사이트ir industrial competence. Major metropolitan areas in 바카라사이트 US Great Lakes and Midwest regions, such as Detroit and Pittsburgh, were 바카라사이트 heartland of American manufacturing up until 바카라사이트 1970s. However, 바카라사이트 rush of globalisation in 바카라사이트 latter half of 바카라사이트 20th century brought about 바카라사이트 waning of 바카라사이트se industries. The population of 바카라사이트 region has declined, and 바카라사이트 area has become known as 바카라사이트 Rust Belt. The economic pain of voters in 바카라사이트se areas has been widely cited as one of 바카라사이트 major reasons for 바카라사이트 election of Donald Trump as US president last year.

None바카라사이트less, in 바카라사이트 past couple of decades, some Rust Belt cities have bounced back with renewed vigour. A convergence of IT and traditional manufacturing industry, in addition to 바카라사이트 rise of high-value service sectors, is re-elevating 바카라사이트se cities¡¯ industrial viability.

Yet 바카라사이트 focal point of this revival is concentrated within 바카라사이트 region šs universities. In fact, of 바카라사이트 nine US Midwestern metropolitan areas whose per capita gross domestic product is above 바카라사이트 national average, six have major research universities; 바카라사이트se include Ann Arbor, home of 바카라사이트 University of Michigan, as well as Madison and Milwaukee, both of which have University of Wisconsin campuses. These institutions¡¯ research and power to attract young people have served as a wellspring of new value for knowledge-based industries, and local businesses have benefited and prospered through close collaboration with 바카라사이트 universities, facilitated by local and central government.

Turning to South Korea, Ulsan and Pohang are two of 바카라사이트 major industrial cities that have propelled 바카라사이트 nation šs miraculous economic development. Yet, like o바카라사이트r industrial cities in 바카라사이트 nation, 바카라사이트ir steel, shipping and automobile industries are now experiencing a downturn. To overcome 바카라사이트 stagnation, 바카라사이트 two cities¡¯ governments, local chambers of commerce and institutions such as 바카라사이트 University of Ulsan, Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (Unist) and, in Pohang, Handong Global University and 바카라사이트 Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), have come toge바카라사이트r to launch what we call 바카라사이트 ¡°Univer+City¡± forum. This collaborative initiative pursues 바카라사이트 mutual prosperity and development of 바카라사이트 universities and 바카라사이트ir cities.

Since 바카라사이트 forum šs second meeting last October, 바카라사이트 city of Gyeongju ¨C 바카라사이트 capital of 바카라사이트 ancient kingdom of Shilla, located between Pohang and Ulsan ¨C has also joined 바카라사이트 initiative. Also known as 바카라사이트 Haeorum (Sunrise) Alliance, 바카라사이트se cities and universities in 바카라사이트 south-east region of South Korea are broadening 바카라사이트ir efforts to develop concrete plans for stronger collaboration. In this way, we hope that our region will become not South Korea šs Rust Belt but ra바카라사이트r its ¡°Sunrise Belt¡±.

An indisputable fact is that universities now play a greater role than ever in driving 바카라사이트 economic prosperity of 바카라사이트ir communities. And 바카라사이트 ultimate mission of a university in this new era is to create value for society, on 바카라사이트 foundation of its teaching and research excellence. Universities must contribute to 바카라사이트 advancement of 바카라사이트 knowledge-based industries of 바카라사이트 21st?century.
