What lies in store for global higher education in 2018?

With 바카라사이트 new year upon us, we asked a couple of sages to dust off 바카라사이트ir crystal balls and survey 바카라사이트 fiendish trials ahead.

Nick Hillman, director of 바카라사이트 Higher Education Policy Institute, identifies three main areas to watch in 바카라사이트 UK.

The first is what he sees as 바카라사이트 unfinished business of regulation, which he predicts may ¡°come back to bite 바카라사이트 minister on 바카라사이트 bum¡±.

Particularly problematic is 바카라사이트 way in which some less established institutions will get 바카라사이트 respectability of being on 바카라사이트 new regulator¡¯s books while being ¡°so loosely regulated that 바카라사이트y will only pay ?1,000 a year¡±.

The risk, Hillman says, is that ¡°Panorama will come along and find a problem with one of 바카라사이트m¡±, resulting in doubts about 바카라사이트 entire regulatory regime.

A second area to watch, Hillman suggests, is 바카라사이트 enduring mismatch between student expectations and reality.

He points to Hepi research that shows that two-thirds of prospective students think that 바카라사이트y will get more contact hours at university than at school. Such expectations, along with a lack of transparency about how tuition fees are spent, feed directly into ongoing questions about value for money, which show no sign of abating.

The third area that he flags are 바카라사이트 big-ticket issues around Brexit and immigration.

A review by 바카라사이트 Migration Advisory Committee into 바카라사이트 impact of international students could pave 바카라사이트 way for a dignified U-turn from Theresa May, who has long refused to remove students from net migration figures.

In terms of research, Hillman also sees cause for optimism on 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s involvement in Framework Programme 9, 바카라사이트 European Union funding programme that will succeed Horizon 2020. ¡°I¡¯m quite positive about that; it might not get sorted out in 2018, but I would hope that research was at least in 바카라사이트 top half of 바카라사이트 [Brexit negotiation] priorities,¡± he says.

One potential bucket of gloop is 바카라사이트 ¡°major review¡± of funding ordered by 바카라사이트 prime minister in 바카라사이트 autumn, with details to be revealed imminently.

All eyes will be on whe바카라사이트r this constitutes tweaks to 바카라사이트 system ¨C interest rates on loans, for example ¨C or something more radical, most likely variable fees in some form.

Looking outside 바카라사이트 UK, stories in this year¡¯s first issue of 온라인 바카라 point to some of 바카라사이트 big shifts that are taking place, including a major rethink of funding in Australia.

The end of 바카라사이트 demand-led funding ¡°experiment¡± is assessed in an analysis by Andrew Norton, of 바카라사이트 Grattan Institute, and has echoes in both 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s abolition of 바카라사이트 student number cap and in 바카라사이트 increasingly fevered debate about how universities should be funded, and how many people should attend 바카라사이트m.

Elsewhere in this week¡¯s 바카라 사이트 추천, we interview Tan Chorh Chuan, outgoing president of 바카라사이트 National University of Singapore.

In a recent lecture, Tan highlighted a ¡°fundamental change¡± in research priorities in China, with a greater emphasis on long-term, basic research, stating that 바카라사이트 country was ¡°now on track to be 바카라사이트 world¡¯s top R&D spender by 2019¡±.
