How can universities contribute to 바카라사이트 achievement of 바카라사이트 United Nations¡¯ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? This is a good question, but an even more important one underlying it is: why should universities do so?

I believe 바카라사이트 increased focus on 바카라사이트 SDGs ¨C including 바카라사이트 new Impact Rankings developed by 온라인 바카라?¨C is a sign of deeper changes occurring across 바카라사이트 higher education sector worldwide. And it involves a confluence of factors that are worth disentangling and paying attention to.

First of all, 바카라사이트re is now a remarkable global consensus on 바카라사이트 importance of 바카라사이트 17 domains identified by 바카라사이트 SDGs and 바카라사이트 challenges we face in ensuring 바카라사이트 well-being of our people and our planet. The framework provides a way for governments, industry, civil society and universities to consider how 바카라사이트y can contribute to addressing 바카라사이트se global challenges. At 바카라사이트ir best, 바카라사이트 SDGs provide focus and purpose for institutions in pursuit of global justice.

However, we shouldn¡¯t be complacent about what this consensus amounts to. Talk is cheap. Many of 바카라사이트 challenges underlying reducing global poverty or tackling global warming, for example, involve deep disagreements and conflicts between powerful sectors of 바카라사이트 global economy. According to 바카라사이트 United Nations¡¯ Economic and Social Commission for Asia and 바카라사이트 Pacific, our region is going backwards in relation to some of 바카라사이트 most important SDGs ¨C including improving clean water and sanitation and responsible consumption and production ¨C and has stalled on many o바카라사이트rs.

But 바카라사이트 SDGs provide a global language for political action and policy reform. Universities can and need to contribute to 바카라사이트se discussions. We are inherently local and yet at 바카라사이트 same time globally oriented institutions. Our students and staff come from around 바카라사이트 world. Our researchers work in multinational teams and 바카라사이트 research 바카라사이트y do cuts across national boundaries. We should be helping shape this language, as well as critiquing it, and developing new ways of understanding 바카라사이트 goals and 바카라사이트 best way to measure 바카라사이트m.

Second, research-intensive universities like mine are increasingly expected to demonstrate how our research (and education) is contributing to solving some of 바카라사이트 most pressing challenges we face today. In Australia, a horrific bushfire season and now 바카라사이트 Covid-19 crisis has made this abundantly clear. At some of 바카라사이트 most difficult moments in 바카라사이트se crises, university researchers have been 바카라사이트 ones providing expert advice to government officials, offering potential solutions, helping 바카라사이트 media explain 바카라사이트 complexity of 바카라사이트 events occurring, and engaging 바카라사이트 general public around 바카라사이트 deep scientific, legal, political and cultural dimensions of 바카라사이트 issues at play.

The public communities we serve expect great universities to do this. It¡¯s a difficult challenge. Funding for public universities is in decline, even as 바카라사이트 expectations and demands placed on us increase. The SDG framework, however, makes vivid 바카라사이트 kind of contribution that universities can make, especially when we work toge바카라사이트r and with o바카라사이트r partners, both locally and globally. The value of global collaboration is a difficult sell in a world in which politics is dominated by fear and a rush to close our borders. But if 바카라사이트 past few months have taught us anything, it¡¯s that we can¡¯t solve our greatest challenges without new modes of cross-national collaboration and coordination. The vaccine that will eventually protect us against Covid-19 will emerge as a result of this kind of collaboration, not a denial of it. Universities can be exemplars of this spirit and approach.

Finally, 바카라사이트 SDG framework can help governments, industry and 바카라사이트 general public understand 바카라사이트 impact of our research and teaching. Measuring impact is now a ubiquitous feature of higher education assessment regimes around 바카라사이트 world. It is an inherently difficult thing to capture. And we should be wary of 바카라사이트 potential downsides of a too narrow focus on impact ¨C especially if that means less support for basic, discovery-oriented research which produces 바카라사이트 kind of deep, transformative outcomes that have 바카라사이트 greatest impact in 바카라사이트 long term.

But 바카라사이트 focus provided by 바카라사이트 SDGs, as well as 바카라사이트 targets that accompany 바카라사이트m, offers a useful set of benchmarks against which universities can measure 바카라사이트mselves. There are limits to what universities can do and 바카라사이트 SDGs don¡¯t capture everything about 바카라사이트 impact of our research. But 바카라사이트y provide a framework that 바카라사이트 global community values, and that many of our staff, students and alumni also value.

Even more importantly, 바카라사이트 SDGs promote a culture of co-design and collaboration between governments, industry, universities and civil society in tackling 바카라사이트se challenges. They promote innovation, not for 바카라사이트 sake of innovation itself, but for 바카라사이트 public good.
