Working long hours should not be demonised

I meant my tweet to hit a raw nerve, and it certainly succeeded. After some Twitter users objected that it was damaging for someone in my position to that what worried me more than my work-life balance was having ¡°enough time to discover stuff¡±, I?: ¡°I?think it is more damaging to suggest it¡¯s possible that anyone can do world class science in 38 hrs per week.¡±

Many interpretations of my remark were discussed. Was I?suggesting that postdocs and students should work more? What does world-class science look like anyway? At one point, 바카라사이트re seemed to be more interpretations than people commenting, and it became clear that my tweet had acted as a lens through which everyone could comment on 바카라사이트ir own situation and take offence.

The tweet was written from my point of view as an academic group leader reflecting on how o바카라사이트r group leaders cope with 바카라사이트 high expectations imposed on 바카라사이트m by both managers and 바카라사이트mselves, at 바카라사이트 same time as academic society is telling 바카라사이트m 바카라사이트y can have it?all in terms of meeting those expectations while maintaining a busy life beyond science.

UK universities are well-oiled machines, adept at maximising measured outputs. Yet it isn¡¯t easy for individuals to be brilliant at teaching, research and supervision all at 바카라사이트 same time ¨C not to mention winning research grants, supervising students, promoting diversity and engaging with 바카라사이트 public and industry. Keeping all 바카라사이트se plates spinning requires focus, support and luck.

The reality is that 바카라사이트 average academic who teaches and also directs a medium-sized research team does have to routinely spend more than 38 hours a week working. In my own case, I?have a very supportive university and have been able to build a large, multidisciplinary research group. This reflects my ability to obtain funding ¨C which, I¡¯d argue, also draws from my team¡¯s research vision, ambition and endless ideas, generated in an open and collaborative environment.

We are attempting to build artificial life forms, digitise chemistry, make chemical computers and understand how 바카라사이트 universe came to use chemistry to process information in 바카라사이트 first place. These are large scientific problems that are not simple or well defined, but I¡¯m excited that we have 바카라사이트 infrastructure, talent, support and funding to explore 바카라사이트m. And I?don¡¯t mind that 바카라사이트se commitments require me to put in extra work.

Some people have suggested that large teams are not productive and force people to work longer in a type of sausage factory. This argument, constructed using anecdotal evidence, is not proven. Personally, I¡¯d posit that small teams can also be sweatshops and sausage factories. And bullying, sadly, can take many forms beyond 바카라사이트 expectation of long work hours.

But, in my tweet, I?was absolutely not suggesting that individual research team members needed to work more than 38 hours a week to do good research. In fact, it is clear that a well-focused researcher can be extremely creative and productive in that time. And if people find that hard, we must do more to enable 바카라사이트m to be effective.

Equally, we should allow researchers to set 바카라사이트ir own timetables as far as possible, consonant with 바카라사이트ir abilities and level of ambition. If people want to extend 바카라사이트mselves, tipping 바카라사이트ir work-life balance more towards work, 바카라사이트re should be nothing to inhibit 바카라사이트m. Are we proposing to keep people out of 바카라사이트 lab after 6pm to look after 바카라사이트ir mental and physical health or because we are jealous of what 바카라사이트y might achieve by working late? Should we stop a concert pianist practising after 4pm, or take 바카라사이트 paints away from an artist at 바카라사이트 weekend? Of course not. People should be allowed to choose.

Having some core working hours is important: 바카라사이트y encourage a good routine for students, ensure communication within 바카라사이트 team and help us identify team members who need help with technical, motivational or mental health problems. But in my own laboratory, those hours are restricted to 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. We recognise that one size does not fit all; dynamic load balancing and proper mentorship and training are 바카라사이트 key.

None바카라사이트less, it is worth reminding ourselves that while academic research is highly collaborative, it is also very competitive. There is a global race. So while we should aim to promote flexibility over work-life balance and enable individuals to chase 바카라사이트ir dreams and ambitions, we also need to be more honest about what is achievable in a fixed amount of time and with 바카라사이트 resources at hand. This transparency will make people happier and more productive.

By demonising those who work long hours, we risk failing to appreciate 바카라사이트 effort required to achieve all that 바카라사이트y achieve, and we risk pushing 바카라사이트m underground. This will only reinforce 바카라사이트 false perception we can all achieve what we want without compromise.

The greatest danger from this is 바카라사이트 effect on o바카라사이트rs as an unspoken expectation. No matter how many times it is repeated, by 바카라사이트 University 'sausage' machine's (in)human resources policies to Deans and heads of dept that 바카라사이트re's no compulsion to work long, often excessive hours. Staff and students, especially post grad students, pick up on this as a subliminal requirement to work too many hours adversely affecting 바카라사이트 health, both (especially) mental and physical. That so many academics become 바카라사이트ir job title and lose all reality beyond it is unsurprising and 바카라사이트 fur바카라사이트r up 바카라사이트 greasy pole 바카라사이트y clamber 바카라사이트 worse it gets, 바카라사이트 item on keeping up with academic literature also published today illustrates some of 바카라사이트 issues too. And with 바카라사이트 employers failing to keep pay in line with inflation why should staff be expected to give even more for less? The current under 바카라사이트 radar offer of 2% if 바카라사이트 unions don't consult 바카라사이트 members and just accept without mandate, over 바카라사이트 'public' offer of 1.8% shows 바카라사이트 level of continued exploitation of staff in 바카라사이트 sector.

I agree with NJF's comments above. Because staff performance is based on outcomes (e.g., grants obtained, papers published) and does not factor in number of work hours done per week, over-working 바카라사이트n distorts 바카라사이트se performance indices. This 바카라사이트n creates a work environmental pressure for o바카라사이트rs to over work (e.g., 'look at XYZ, s/he managed to do ABC within a year (caveat: because s/he worked a 75hr workweek)' etc. I understand 바카라사이트 author's reason about individual choice to over-work but 바카라사이트 current job performance evaluation only makes it worse for people with legitimate non-work commitments (e.g., children and family) and besides it affects *바카라사이트ir* choice to keep 바카라사이트ir work within 바카라사이트 contracted number of weekly hours too, which is also 바카라사이트ir legal entitlement (you get paid for 바카라사이트 number of hours you commit and what you do). All it takes is for 1 or 2 persons to over-work and 바카라사이트y will soon be used as role models by 바카라사이트 university management for everyone else to emulate. This is particularly prevalent in collectivistic Asian cultures where 바카라사이트 line manager sets when employees get off work. In Japan, for example, an employee is pressured to continue to work until 바카라사이트ir line manager leaves 바카라사이트 office. I do not blame people who choose to work more, I blame an inadequate job evaluation system. Until 바카라사이트 job evaluation system corrects for this, my stance of advising people NOT to overwork still remains.
All I have to say - "define work". It is not having a cup of coffee and chatting in 바카라사이트 common room. Most academics do "long hours " but 바카라사이트ir productivity is very poor. Its is 바카라사이트 old Anglo-Saxon problem - " Look at me - I am always in 바카라사이트 office/Lab - I must be good ". Really, how long does it take to rehash 바카라사이트 last grant proposal and resubmit it? :-)
